Bills acquire five-time Pro Bowl WR Amari Cooper from Browns

On Tuesday, another AFC East team strengthened its roster by trading for a prominent wide receiver.

The Buffalo Bills have reached an agreement to trade for Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns, sending a third-round pick in 2025 in return. Additionally, Buffalo will receive a sixth-round pick in 2025, while the Browns will get a seventh-round pick in 2026.

Jordan Schultz from FOX Sports broke the news first.

This deal follows closely behind the report that the New York Jets are close to securing a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams.

At 30 years old, Cooper has made five Pro Bowl appearances but has struggled this season with only 24 receptions for 250 yards and two touchdowns on 53 targets. The Browns are currently at the bottom of the league in total offense, averaging 240.2 yards per game, and their passing game has been particularly underwhelming while Coach Kevin Stefanski continues to support struggling quarterback Deshaun Watson.

“We want to express our gratitude for Amari’s professionalism, work ethic, and contributions on the field during his time with us,” said Andrew Berry, the general manager of the Browns. “He provided us with many memorable plays and was a key part of our playoff team in 2023. We wish him well as he moves to Buffalo and continues his career in the NFL.”

Cooper’s base salary is a modest $1.21 million following a restructuring of his contract with Cleveland.

In Buffalo, he will play a significant role in the revamped receiving group for quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills, who currently lead their division with a record of 4-2. The team is still adjusting after trading their top target Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in the offseason. Allen, who sits fifth in the league with a 106.8 passer rating and has thrown 10 touchdowns without any interceptions, has yet to have a receiver exceed 250 yards this season.

With trade rumors swirling as the November 5 deadline approaches, Cooper had assured reporters he was not concerned about switching teams.

“I’m focused on our wins, not on any trade talks,” Cooper stated last Thursday.

Cooper has now been traded three times in his ten-year NFL career, having moved from the Oakland Raiders to the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 and then to Cleveland in 2022.
