FDNY Deems ‘A Haunting in Hollis’ a ‘Death Trap,’ Leading to Its Closure

NYC haunted house ‘A Haunting in Hollis’ closed by FDNY for safety violations

The Fire Department of New York City has shut down a haunted house, labeling it a ‘death trap’ on Thursday.

“A Haunting in Hollis” faced closure after the Bureau of Fire Prevention discovered numerous safety violations, according to various local news outlets.

FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker told WABC on Friday, “We want everyone to celebrate Halloween safely. It’s a wonderful holiday, especially for kids, but what we encountered was hazardous.”

Reported violations included three improperly built staircases, blocked emergency exits, and the removal of fireproof materials, as stated by WPIX.

This haunted house in Queens has been operating since 2002 and was featured on an episode of “The Nick Cannon Show” in 2021.

Haunted house plans to reopen soon

The attraction announced its plan to reopen by October 18 via an Instagram update on Thursday.

The message read, “We sincerely apologize for the issues and disappointment. We are working hard to meet the safety mandates set by the department of buildings and FDNY.”

The business has started issuing refunds for any pending ticket purchases. As of Tuesday evening, their ticketing website showed no available dates for future visits.

A lawsuit was filed against the haunted house by Solainne Moncero-Tannis on October 2, according to the New York Post. The suit claims she suffered broken ankles during a visit in 2023.
