Lane Kiffin and Other College Football Coaches Poised for Major Salary Increases in 2025

Lane Kiffin Among College Football Head Coaches Anticipating Big Raises in 2025

Florida State had to open their wallet wide to retain Mike Norvell.

After securing an ACC championship and just missing a spot in the College Football Playoff, Norvell emerged as a frontrunner for the potential vacancy at Alabama following Nick Saban’s unexpected retirement in January.

Norvell’s new deal will give him a total compensation of $10 million in 2024, along with one of the largest buyouts among current Football Bowl Subdivision coaches at $70.1 million. Unfortunately for Florida State, the results have not matched expectations: currently, they have a record of 1-5, making them one of the season’s biggest disappointments.

Several coaches are poised to see substantial pay raises this offseason. Will these increases be justified, or will schools feel regret? Here are five coaches likely to earn more after this season:

Lane Kiffin, Mississippi

With total compensation of $9 million in 2024, Kiffin is already among the highest-paid coaches in the Bowl Subdivision. However, he has been linked to the impending opening at Florida, which is expected to seek prominent names to replace third-year coach Billy Napier. This raises the likelihood of Kiffin receiving a pay raise, either from Florida or from another prestigious program in need of a new coach. Meanwhile, the Rebels might look to renegotiate his contract in light of growing interest from other SEC teams.

GJ Kinne, Texas State

The 35-year-old former Tulsa quarterback has quickly made an impact by guiding Incarnate Word to the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision as a rookie coach in 2022, and then steering Texas State to a bowl game during his first year. The Bobcats have a 4-2 record this season, including a perfect 2-0 mark in the Sun Belt, along with a competitive loss to Arizona State. His rapid success and fast-paced offensive style make him a prime candidate for top-level Group of Five coaching positions this offseason. With a salary just over $1 million, Kinne currently ranks 88th among coaches in compensation.

Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State

As the youngest coach in the Power Four, Dillingham took the reins of a struggling Arizona State program that only won three games last season. Following a victory against then-No. 17 Utah last Friday, the Sun Devils boast a 5-1 record and are just outside the US LBM Coaches Poll. His background as an ASU graduate who began on the high school football circuit before moving up to college ranks makes him a strong candidate to lead the team back to prominence in the Big 12. However, his team’s success could compel the school to increase his salary to align it with the top earners in the league, as his current compensation of $3.95 million in 2024 is among the lowest for Big 12 coaches at public universities.

Deion Sanders, Colorado

Could Sanders be due for a salary increase after demonstrating positive performance on the field to match his significant influence off the field? This season, he is earning $5.7 million, which is considered quite reasonable given the vast media attention, excitement, and interest surrounding the Buffaloes since his arrival from Jackson State. While last year’s performance was more flash than substance, the current record stands at 4-2, placing the team in a strong position to compete for a bowl game. Although Sanders isn’t likely to be a primary candidate for major openings in the Power Four—especially with Norvell’s job at FSU being secure—there’s a possibility of revising and extending his contract following a successful run in 2024.

Barry Odom, UNLV

Odom is already recognized as one of the most undercompensated coaches in the FBS, with a salary of $1.75 million per year. Furthermore, his $4 million buyout is a reasonable amount for Power Four institutions looking for a new coach after the current season. Even though UNLV faced a setback against Syracuse this month and fell from the Top 25 ranking, the Rebels have been strong competitors in the Mountain West since Odom’s arrival in 2023. This success may attract interest from some mid-tier Power Four job openings, although schools must overlook his previous four years at Missouri, where the Tigers never finished better than third in the SEC East division.
