Do I need to register to vote?

If you haven’t registered yet, you will need to do so in order to cast your vote in South Dakota.

How do I register?

You can download and complete this paper form, which you must then either mail or hand deliver to your county auditor. Please note that you cannot send this form by fax or email.

What’s the registration deadline?

The last day to submit your registration to vote in the 2024 general elections is October 21.

Is voting by mail an option?

If you can’t vote in person on Election Day, you may be able to request an absentee ballot. You will need to print and fill out this paper form, and then send it or deliver it to your county election official. Only voters who are overseas or in the military can submit their applications via fax or email. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on November 4, the day before Election Day.

When is the last day I can submit my ballot?

According to the South Dakota Secretary of State’s website, “Your completed ballot MUST be received by your County Election Official by Election Day to ensure it can be delivered to your precinct before the polls close.”
