This week, we feature Megan Waterman, the owner of The Book Nook in Canby, Oregon!

What’s the story behind your store?

The Book Nook is a cozy, woman-owned bookstore located in a small town. Since its launch six years ago, we have expanded our offerings to include both new and used books, along with a selection of gifts and games. Throughout this growth, our primary mission has remained: to provide our community with a welcoming space to come together and enjoy stories.

What sets your independent bookstore apart?

We take pride in being a community gathering hub. We organize various book clubs, storytimes, and game nights. Additionally, we support local authors and artists by collaborating with our city’s art association and participating in local markets and events.

What’s your favorite section in the store?

I absolutely love our children’s area. It features a snug reading chair for parents alongside little chairs for kids, and we adore hearing the excitement from young readers as they embark on new literary journeys. We make sure to maintain a wide variety of plush toys (which we refer to as reading buddies), activity books, and games for children.

Which book do you frequently recommend, and why?

A current favorite of mine to recommend is “The Adventure of Amina Al Sirafi” by Shannon Chakraborty. This fantasy novel, set 600 years prior to Chakraborty’s City of Brass trilogy, draws inspiration from Middle Eastern folklore. It has everything I love: a strong female protagonist, thrilling sea adventures, and a touch of romance.

Which book do you feel deserves more spotlight and why?

I wish “The Secret Book of Flora Lea” by Patti Callahan Henry received more attention among historical fiction enthusiasts. It was one of my top reads last year, unfolding the journey of a woman who stumbles upon a rare book linked to her past, revealing long-buried secrets regarding her missing sister and their childhood spent in the English countryside during World War II.

What upcoming books or series are you eagerly anticipating and why?

Joining the ranks of romantasy enthusiasts, I can’t wait for “Onyx Storm,” the third installment in Rebecca Yarros’ The Empyrean Series, because it features dragons and dragon riders!

Why is it essential to shop at local, independent bookstores?

Stories are vital; they teach us about ourselves and the world around us. We believe that a well-curated bookstore plays a significant role in a thriving community, providing a space to connect, explore, and celebrate with real people. Plus, there’s usually a friendly bookstore dog (or cat) to welcome and celebrate with you!
