Second tourist loses life after being pulled into the sea in Hawaii; third patient receiving treatment

A second tourist has died after being caught in rough waters in Hawaii.

Laura Sue Jett, 72, from Oklahoma City, has been named the second fatality in a high surf incident at Ke Iki Beach on Oʻahu’s North Shore on Monday, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office as reported by YSL News.

The North Shore is located 26 miles north of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Just after 8 a.m., emergency services, including the Ocean Safety and Fire Department, responded to a 911 alert about two women, aged 72 and 31, and a 63-year-old man being swept into the ocean at Ke Iki Beach, a well-known spot infamous for its strong shorebreak and lacking a lifeguard station, as shared by a spokesman for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

At the time, the North Shore of Oʻahu was under a high surf advisory, with wave heights of six to eight feet, and conditions expected to worsen with waves potentially reaching 18 feet. The beach had signs warning of strong currents and dangerous surf.

Oʻahu’s North Shore is renowned for its massive and unpredictable waves in the winter, attracting surfers and spectators from around the globe.

The man who died, identified as Bryan Kunic from Hollister, California, could not be revived and was declared dead at the beach, as confirmed by the medical examiner’s office.

The two women were rushed to the hospital. One was unresponsive and in critical condition, while the other was awake and in serious condition, according to authorities.

Both women were visiting Hawaii from Oklahoma.

GoFundMe launched for three victims from Oʻahu North Shore

A family friend set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with expenses for the two women while they are in Hawaii.

The friend provided additional information about the tragic events of Monday in the post.

“Susie required over 45 minutes of CPR and remains in critical condition on life support in the ICU,” the post stated.

Laura Rich, Jett’s daughter, is currently responsive but requires oxygen. Her husband, Bryan, traveled to be there with her, as stated in the post.

“We aim to provide the family with as much love, compassion, and support as possible during this challenging time, covering lodging, meals, transportation, medical, and other unforeseen costs that may arise in the coming weeks and months,” the post read.

Kunic was remembered as an engineer and a devoted animal lover who cherished traveling.

“He was seated on the beach when a massive wave came in, tumbling him and pulling him into the ocean,” the post explained.

Kunic is survived by his wife, Carolyn.

“The sudden death brings emotional pain and stress and can lead to financial challenges as well,” the post added. “We hope to raise funds for Carolyn to assist with Bryan’s return home and to cover any funeral costs.”

The specific cause and manner of death for both victims remain under investigation by the medical examiner’s office.
