Alec Baldwin Makes a Triumphant Return to ‘SNL’ as Bret Baier Grilling Kamala Harris

Surprise! Alec Baldwin is back on ‘SNL’ as Bret Baier interviewing Kamala Harris

Alec Baldwin has made his return to “Saturday Night Live” − but this time he stepped into the role of Bret Baier instead of portraying former President Donald Trump.

The “30 Rock” actor appeared on the NBC sketch comedy show to parody Baier in a skit that mocked the Fox News host’s recent interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, portrayed by Maya Rudolph. Baldwin’s version of Baier was depicted as confrontational, frequently interrupting Harris and asking her challenging questions.

“Thank you, Bret,” said Rudolph’s Harris as she took her seat. “The pleasure is none of ours.”

“When I spoke with President Trump, my opening question was, ‘What do you consider the biggest issue facing our country?’” Baldwin, as Baier, said. “So for you, my first question is, ‘What is the exact number of murderers you released into this country?’”

As Baier kept interrupting her response, she pleaded for him to listen, to which he replied, “Well, I can’t because I’m talking.”

At one point, Baldwin’s Baier showcased misleading clips of President Joe Biden (played by Dana Carvey) that made it seem like he was discussing Harris when he was actually talking about something else. “Everything she touches will be destroyed,” Biden stated. “No joke. Watch out, Florida!” Harris clarified that Biden was “clearly referring to the hurricane.”

“Four years ago, it was unbelievable,” Biden said in another clip. “He was the guy everyone wanted. But now we have this girl, and people are questioning her presence. What’s going on?” It turned out Biden was talking about Joaquin Phoenix in the “Joker” movie sequel “Folie à Deux,” where Lady Gaga joins as Harley Quinn.

The skit also made fun of Harris’s apparent attempts to create a viral moment during the interview. She turned to the camera as a TikTok filter took over and threw out phrases like “very demure, very mindful” and “in da clurb, we all fam.”

Clips featuring Trump (James Austin Johnson) were included in the segment, highlighting moments where he danced in a parody of a recent town hall event where he danced for an extended period after interruptions from medical emergencies. Rudolph’s Harris teased Trump for dancing to “Y.M.C.A.” and pointed out that he does not realize it’s “a gay anthem.”

The skit ended with Baier continually interrupting Harris as she attempted to explain why Americans should support her, ultimately cutting her off before she could finish her thought. “That was fun, right?” Baldwin’s Baier remarked. “I had fun.”

This was Baldwin’s first appearance back on “SNL” since the involuntary manslaughter charges against him related to the “Rust” film were dismissed in July due to allegations that prosecutors failed to disclose key evidence. He had faced charges connected to the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set in 2021.

Baldwin previously portrayed Trump on “SNL,” earning an Emmy for the role in 2017. Johnson has taken over the role since 2021.

Michael Keaton hosted the episode, and during his opening monologue, he was interrupted by Mikey Day and Andy Samberg, who mimicked Beetlejuice. “Don’t you usually play Doug Emhoff (Harris’ husband) during the cold opens?” Keaton asked Samberg, who clarified, “Uh, yeah, the writers couldn’t fit him into the script this week, so here we are.”

“SNL” will continue next week with host John Mulaney and musical guest Chappell Roan.
