Mass Recall Issued for 90,000 Fire Pits Sold on Amazon and Walmart Following Reports of Burn Injuries

Recall of nearly 90,000 fire pits from Amazon and Walmart due to reported burn injuries

A total of almost 90,000 tabletop fire pits are being recalled after several injury reports.

The recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on October 17, involving 89,500 fire pits under the Colsen brand.

The agency urged consumers to stop using the recalled fire pits immediately and to dispose of them properly.

Recall triggered by 31 injury reports

The CPSC has received 31 reports concerning “flame jetting and flames escaping” from the fire pits, which led to 19 cases of burn injuries.

The CPSC explained that “flame jetting” can occur when alcohol is poured into the fire pit and the flame flashes back to the alcohol container, causing flaming alcohol to be expelled onto nearby individuals.

Among the reported cases, two resulted in third-degree burns affecting over 40% of the victims’ bodies. The CPSC noted that “at least six incidents involved surgery, extended medical treatment, hospitalization at burn centers, temporary disability, loss of functionality, physical therapy, or permanent scarring.”

The CPSC also warned that “alcohol may splatter, spill, or leak from the fire pit while in use, which could lead to a flash fire and generate larger, hotter flames that escape beyond the unit.”

Which fire pits are affected by the recall?

The recall encompasses seven models of Colsen fire pits, with sizes varying from 5 to 18 inches wide. These were sold from January 2020 to July 2024 through Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, and on social media platforms like Meta and TikTok.

The product recall identification number is 25-015.
