MAGADonald’s? Trump Campaign Launches T-Shirt Sales from Fast Food Visit

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump continues to make headlines as he shifts into the final stretch of the 2024 election campaign, bringing an element of fast food into the mix while many Americans are feeling the pinch of rising food costs.

Following a viral incident on Sunday, where he donned an apron and served fries at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, Trump’s campaign is now offering “MAGADonald’s” t-shirts for sale.

“I’ve got a McGift for you!” proclaims the campaign’s online shop, which features a shirt with Trump posing at a drive-thru window.

While some critics labeled the visit as a publicity stunt, it was also a strategic move by the Trump campaign to challenge Vice President Kamala Harris’s connection with working and middle-class voters, particularly her references to her time at the $225 billion fast food chain during college.

Trump also took jabs at his Democratic opponent, insinuating without proof that she never actually worked at McDonald’s.

“I’m looking for work, and I’ve always wanted to work at McDonald’s. I never did,” he remarked in a video shared on X.

Trump’s campaign linked the t-shirt sales to voter dissatisfaction over ongoing price increases, criticizing Harris for inflation during the Biden administration, claiming, “meal prices are skyrocketing” due to their policies.

A recent October poll conducted by Swiftly, a retail tech company based in Seattle, revealed that approximately 70% of U.S. adults are battling the high cost of groceries. Around 64% indicated that grocery bills and inflation will significantly influence their voting decisions in the upcoming election.

In September, overall inflation reached a three-year low, according to data from the Labor Department’s consumer price index, with grocery prices rising by about 0.4%. Analysts emphasized that food and energy prices tend to be more unpredictable than other consumer goods. For instance, egg prices surged 8.4% because of a two-year bird flu outbreak.

The Harris campaign has responded by highlighting Trump’s reluctance to back increasing the minimum wage. Previously, during his 2019 presidential run, Harris visited a McDonald’s in Nevada advocating for Congress to raise the hourly wage to $15.

Harris’s team also pointed out that Trump’s Department of Labor tended to side with fast food corporations rather than employees regarding wage violations.

“Vice President Harris and I come from middle-class backgrounds. We understand those challenges,” said Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, during a guest appearance on The View. “She genuinely worked at a McDonald’s.”

“Unlike Trump, who posed for a picture in a red tie without showing genuine respect for McDonald’s employees, Harris has consistently advocated for their rights and welfare regarding homeownership, healthcare, reproductive rights, and the cost of living,” Walz added.
