YSL News to unveil ranking of America’s Climate Leaders for Earth Day 2025
Numerous companies are making concerted efforts to lower their carbon footprints to contribute to global climate initiatives. But which specific companies are involved?
Over the last two years, YSL News has collaborated with Statista to create a list ranking U.S. companies based on their achievements in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Now entering its third year, the initiative invites businesses to submit their details for the upcoming 2025 list, which is set to be published on Earth Day.
Businesses can access the survey here. The submission deadline is December 22, 2024.
This ranking plays a crucial role in the discussion about climate change in the United States, especially since similar federal initiatives have faced delays.
In April, potential federal regulations requiring businesses to report their climate impact and greenhouse gas emissions were postponed due to numerous lawsuits claiming the regulations exceeded the authority of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
California implemented a law in 2023 that mandates specific companies operating in the state to report their greenhouse gas emissions, but these requirements will not take effect until 2026.
While the implementation of emission reporting regulations is delayed, some U.S. businesses continue to make strides in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and are proactively sharing their efforts.
The YSL News and Statista ranking aims to inform readers about the progress their business partners and investments are making in emission reductions from 2021 to 2023.
The rankings are determined by emissions intensity, which gauges the amount of greenhouse gases a company emits in relation to its revenue, allowing for fair comparisons across different-sized businesses. While only Scope 1 and 2 emissions are mandatory for reporting, companies can choose to include Scope 3 emissions. Those that report Scope 3 emissions will receive recognition for their transparency. (Greenhouse emissions are categorized into three scopes: Scope 1, 2, and 3).
To be eligible, companies must be based in the U.S. and have a minimum revenue of $50 million in 2023.
