Fantasy football waiver wire: 10 players to consider for NFL Week 8

A significant number of injuries have left numerous fantasy managers struggling, particularly for Week 8, despite all NFL teams being active this week.

While it’s nearly impossible to fully replace stars like Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, or Rashid Shaheed, we might need to explore the depths of the player pool to fill their shoes.

This week’s waiver wire picks are predominantly filled with wide receivers, which should help address the gaps left by the injured starters.

Fantasy football players to consider for Week 8

The players mentioned here are listed based on their availability in Fantrax leagues, from the least to most available, which may differ from other platforms. (Proposed bid values assume a $100 free agency acquisition budget for the season.)

WR Rashod Bateman, Baltimore Ravens (39% availability)

The formidable Ravens offense is thriving, with QB Lamar Jackson throwing five touchdown passes recently. Bateman, the leading receiver in Week 7, caught all four of his passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. If Zay Flowers is limited due to an ankle issue, Bateman’s role could increase significantly. FAAB bid: $10

WR Ricky Pearsall, San Francisco 49ers (49%)

With Brandon Aiyuk facing season-ending knee surgery, Jauan Jennings sidelined due to a hip injury, and Deebo Samuel coping with pneumonia, there needs to be a receiver to catch passes from Brock Purdy. Pearsall, the first-round draft pick for the Niners, debuted in NFL Week 7, gathering three catches for 21 yards and playing the most snaps (44) among all Niners receivers. FAAB bid: $13.

TE Jonnu Smith, Miami Dolphins (57%)

Surprisingly, Smith was Miami’s top receiver on Sunday, with seven catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, not Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle. This occurred while Tyler Huntley was under center, but Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return from injured reserve this week. Nonetheless, Smith, the week’s second-best fantasy tight end, is worth considering if you’ve been rotating tight ends throughout the season. FAAB bid: $4.

QB Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers (59%)

Before Monday night’s game, Wilson ranked as the number one fantasy quarterback of the week with 264 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown, impressive for his first game back from a calf injury. While managers in single-QB leagues likely already have good starters, Wilson’s potential, especially with WR George Pickens, makes him a viable option for temporary starts during bye weeks. FAAB bid: $5

RB Tyler Goodson, Indianapolis Colts (68%)

Jonathan Taylor is aiming to return to practice after missing the last three games due to an ankle injury. In his absence, Goodson and Trey Sermon have been splitting duties. Although Sermon (44% available) has been on the field more, Goodson has showcased greater productivity. FAAB bid: $6

WR Jalen McMillan, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (67%)

The Buccaneers suffered injuries to both their starting wide receivers in Monday night’s game, with Chris Godwin likely out for the remainder of the season. As a third-round rookie, McMillan has significant potential among the receivers lined up across from Mike Evans (who also has a minor hamstring issue). McMillan received eight targets prior to Godwin’s injury, indicating more opportunities ahead. FAAB bid: $8.

QB Jameis Winston, Cleveland Browns (84%)

The Browns struggled with Deshaun Watson at quarterback, possessing the NFL’s least effective offense. The introduction of veteran Winston, known for his aggressive playstyle, could potentially lead to big scoring plays. However, his propensity for turnovers means he should only be considered as a last resort. FAAB bid: $1.

(For reference, Patriots’ Drake Maye remains at 40% availability and finished as QB6 for the week.)

WR Cedric Tillman, Cleveland Browns (87%)

The excitement surrounding Winston’s potential start (we assume this due to Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s finger injury) bodes well for the Browns’ receivers, who are likely to see improved performance. Tillman was the standout player on Sunday with 12 targets, catching eight passes for 81 yards. The Browns may have to play catch-up in upcoming games, and while TE David Njoku seems to be the top target, Tillman ranks higher than Jerry Jeudy and Elijah Moore on the depth chart. FAAB bid: $5.

WR Kalif Raymond, Detroit Lions (87%)

Raymond and Tim Patrick (90% available, mentioned last week) are expected to have increased playing time in the coming weeks.

During the two weeks that Jameson Williams is suspended for two games, Kalif Raymond is expected to step up significantly. This is particularly crucial since Amon-Ra St. Brown, the star receiver, will likely attract even more defensive focus. After scoring his first touchdown of the season against Minnesota, Raymond is anticipated to be a popular waiver wire addition this week. FAAB bid: $4.

WR Cedrick Wilson, New Orleans Saints (95%)

Last week, Bub Means was the favored choice due to injuries to Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. However, Wilson managed to record six receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown in Week 7, while Means only had three catches for 37 yards. Although it may not have a significant impact with rookie Spencer Rattler as quarterback, Wilson is likely available for pickup. The schedule should become more favorable after this week’s game against the Chargers. FAAB bid: $2.
