College football bowl predictions: Georgia claims top position in CFP rankings from Texas

As anticipated, a lot was at stake when No. 4 Georgia faced No. 1 Texas in Week 8. We were unsure whether the Longhorns would solidify their status as the prime contender for the national championship or if the Bulldogs would showcase the tough lessons of competing in the SEC.

The outcome turned out to be in favor of Georgia, who exhibited their superiority over Texas from the start, securing a significant victory in Austin. This result brings about significant changes in this week’s bowl predictions, with Texas losing its previously held top position. Unsurprisingly, it’s the team that defeated them that now takes the lead.

Although the Bulldogs are not leading in the polls compared to Oregon and still have challenging games ahead, they are now considered the frontrunner to win the SEC, positioning them as the likely No. 1 seed in the postseason as determined by the committee. The Ducks remain in contention but sit outside the spots allocated for conference champions with a potential rematch against Ohio State on the horizon.

The playoff scenario also sees a shift as Iowa State steps down from the Big 12 champion spot, making way for Kansas State. While the Cyclones managed a victory over Central Florida, it was far from convincing, especially as the Wildcats demonstrated strong performance against West Virginia. However, there’s still plenty of time left in what has become a highly unpredictable Power Four conference.

As for the postseason picture, it’s notable that two major college football programs are missing. Both Southern California and Oklahoma are facing uphill battles to secure six wins due to their current struggles and tough upcoming schedules.

Important Note: Former Pac-12 schools competing in other conferences will honor existing Pac-12 bowl agreements through the 2025 season.
