Olivia Munn displays mastectomy scars in new Skims campaign: ‘I’m finished with insecurity’

Olivia Munn has decided to embrace her scars following her double mastectomy, no longer allowing herself to feel “insecure.”

The “Newsroom” actress, aged 44, modeled Skims bras in a new advertisement that debuted on Wednesday from Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand. One of the images features Munn in a Skims nipple bra, while another, shared on the brand’s Instagram story, highlights her mastectomy scars from the side.

“When I see my scars or notice how my breasts appear different or how my clothes fit differently, I feel immense gratitude,” Munn stated in a Skims video shared on Instagram. “My body’s appearance tells the story of my long and hard fight.”

As part of this initiative, which coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Skims has announced that from October 23 to October 31, 10% of each bra’s retail price sold will be donated to breast cancer awareness organization Susan G. Komen.

Munn disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis in March, revealing that she had undergone a double mastectomy. She received her diagnosis two months after a normal mammogram because her OB/GYN assessed her risk for breast cancer. “I’m fortunate,” she remarked. “We detected it early enough that I had options. I want the same for any woman who may face this challenge in the future.”

In a “Today” show interview, Munn mentioned that the decision to showcase her scars in the Skims campaign was spontaneous, occurring during the shoot.

“While switching outfits during the shoot, the makeup artist was trying to touch up my scars, and they ended up being quite visible and hard to conceal,” she explained. “It was then that I glanced in the mirror and thought, ‘I’m finished feeling insecure about my scars.’

The “X-Men: Apocalypse” actress added, “It was daunting, but I feel like I’ve been hiding this for far too long, and now I can breathe a little easier.”

During a Wednesday appearance on the Susan G. Komen podcast “Real Pink,” Munn reflected on her initial shock upon seeing her mastectomy scars. She expressed hope that other breast cancer survivors will feel empowered upon seeing these scars featured in a beauty campaign.

“I sincerely hope women notice these images (on) billboards, online, and in magazines, feeling beautiful, knowing they share the same scars I have and that I fully embrace them,” she remarked.

After Kardashian’s Skims introduced a bra featuring built-in nipples, breast cancer patient Philecia La’Bounty shared, “Regardless of Kim’s inspiration, there’s a vast community mourning the loss of their breasts, eager for a practical, cost-effective, and painless way to reclaim their nipples.”

Munn disclosed in a May Vogue interview that she had also undergone a hysterectomy as part of her battle with breast cancer. She and comedian John Mulaney wed in July, and in September, they welcomed their second child, a baby girl born via surrogate.
