USWNT Bounces Back: Three Key Reflections After Iceland Victory Post-Olympics

Three observations as USWNT returns from Olympics with Iceland victory

The U.S. women’s national soccer team has made its comeback, and true to form throughout the Olympics, Emma Hayes guided her team to a win on Thursday evening.

While the victory wasn’t overly dominant, Hayes likely finds satisfaction in securing a 3-1 result against Iceland in a friendly match that was still up for grabs until the closing moments.

Alyssa Thompson kicked things off by scoring in the first half on her return to the USWNT, but Iceland responded swiftly in the second half thanks to a brilliant goal from Selma Sól Magnúsdóttir.

Just as it seemed like the U.S. might have to settle for a draw in their post-Olympics opener, a couple of standout individual efforts changed the tide of the game.

Jaedyn Shaw netted the defining goal in the 85th minute after showcasing impressive skill in the box, and Sophia Smith sealed the game just three minutes later with a powerful half-volley.

Here’s a look at three key insights from the USWNT’s match at Q2 Stadium in Austin.

USWNT’s Young Talent

Thompson hadn’t donned a USWNT jersey for nearly a year before Thursday, while Shaw’s Olympics were cut short due to an injury.

However, both 19-year-olds demonstrated on Thursday that they are not only the future of USWNT but also vital contributors in the now.

Thompson was a constant threat on the right wing in the first half, but it was her move to the left side that helped create the night’s opening goal.

From Iceland’s viewpoint, Thompson was afforded too much time and space as she entered the box, yet she still had work to do after receiving Sam Coffey’s pass.

Thompson adeptly maneuvered to her right before unleashing an unstoppable shot that soared into the top corner for her maiden USWNT goal.

Shaw later made her presence known off the bench with an impressive solo effort, displaying close ball control and speed that few players possess.

With the “Triple Espresso” trio firmly established as the leading attacking threats for the USWNT, consistently finding playing time for Thompson—or any other forward—could prove challenging moving forward.

For Shaw, her versatility across the midfield will significantly aid her chances.

If both youngsters continue their Thursday performance, Hayes must find a way to incorporate them into future games.

Anticipating More Changes

Taking into account the players returning from injuries and those still sidelined, Hayes fielded a nearly optimal starting line-up on Thursday.

Hayes made her first substitution in the 66th minute and eventually switched out five players.

With two upcoming matches over the next six days, it’s clear that the next line-ups Hayes puts out—starting with the Sunday rematch against Iceland—will be quite different.

Prior to the match, Hayes indicated that she wouldn’t field any player for more than two complete games, having consulted with NWSL teams that are keen to ensure their players return in top form ahead of the season’s final matchday.

The coach assured fans there would be player debuts during this series, and on Thursday, two players, Hal Hershfelt and Yazmeen Ryan, made their first appearances.

This leaves four uncapped players on the current roster: Eva Gaetino, Alyssa Malonson, Emily Sams, and Emma Sears. It’s likely that by Wednesday’s finale against Argentina, no uncapped players will remain.

Sophia Smith’s Strong Return

Some questioned Sophia Smith’s inclusion in the October roster since she hadn’t played in over a month due to an ankle injury.

However, Smith took the field with the Portland Thorns last weekend, appearing as a substitute for 30 minutes without any apparent issues.

If there were any doubts regarding Smith’s fitness, she dispelled them with a stunning 18-minute display, capped off by a magnificent half-volley.

Indeed, she’s back.
