Say Goodbye to Free Tacos: The End of the World Series ‘Steal a Base, Steal a Taco’ Promotion

No more free Taco Bell? World Series ‘Steal a Base, Steal a Taco’ cancelled for 2024

Some baseball fans might have a problem with Taco Bell.

According to an MLB spokesperson, Taco Bell is no longer a sponsor of Major League Baseball. As a result, the popular “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” promotion will not occur during the 2024 World Series, which features the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees.

Earlier this year, Sports Business Journal noted that Taco Bell did not appear on MLB’s list of sponsors for 2024, marking the end of a partnership that started in 2004.

The upcoming World Series will be the first since 2014 without the “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” giveaway from Taco Bell.

What exactly was the promotion? Who were the winners? Let’s talk tacos:

‘Steal a Base, Steal a Taco’ history

The “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” initiative was first launched by Taco Bell during the 2007 World Series, which featured the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies. The concept was straightforward: the first player to successfully steal a base during the World Series would earn free tacos for fans to redeem at Taco Bell locations throughout the country.

This promotion became an annual event from 2008 onwards — in 2012, 2015, and every year after — maintaining the same basic premise while offering different benefits each year. For instance, in 2015, fans received a free Breakfast Crunchwrap instead of a taco. In 2022, participants could use Taco Bell’s app to guess the “Taco Hero” and earn a free medium fountain drink along with their taco.

All-time ‘Taco Heroes’ in World Series

Each World Series produces a winner, a loser, an MVP, and since the introduction of Taco Bell’s “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” promotion in 2007, a “Taco Hero.”

Here’s a list of all “Taco Heroes” since Taco Bell created the tradition:

2023: Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks

Ketel Marte, a second baseman for the Diamondbacks, stole the first base during Game 1 of the 2023 World Series against the Texas Rangers, allowing fans to win free tacos. He successfully stole second base off Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi in the top of the third inning, although the Diamondbacks ultimately lost the game 6-5. The Rangers clinched the series with a 4-1 victory.

2022: Kyle Schwarber, Philadelphia Phillies

During Game 1 against the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber stole the first base, reaching it via an infield single off Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu in a tied game at 5-5. He subsequently stole second base and helped secure a 6-5 win for the Phillies. The Astros, however, went on to win the series 4-2.

2021: Ozzie Albies, Atlanta Braves

Only three batters into the 2021 World Series, Ozzie Albies of the Braves stole a base in Game 1 against the Houston Astros, contributing to a 6-2 victory. The Braves ultimately claimed the World Series title with a series win of 4-2, and in recognition of his achievement as the 10th “Taco Hero,” his stolen base was commemorated in Cooperstown.

2020: Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers

Mookie Betts became the first player to earn the title of “Taco Hero” twice when he stole second base during Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Rays. This action contributed to the Dodgers winning the game 8-3 and ultimately the World Series 4-2.

2019: Trea Turner, Washington Nationals

In Game 1, Trea Turner achieved a single on the second pitch before stealing second base to earn fans a free Doritos Locos Taco. The Nationals claimed a narrow 5-4 victory and won the series in seven games. Turner joked afterwards that he stole the base so he wouldn’t disappoint his mom, who wanted tacos.

2018: Mookie Betts, Boston Red Sox

In the opening inning of Game 1 during the 2018 World Series, Mookie Betts singled and then stole second base on the very next pitch. The Red Sox won the game 8-4 and finished the series with four wins.

2017: Cameron Maybin, Houston Astros

Cameron Maybin of the Astros contributed to the team’s success by stealing second base in Game 2 against the Dodgers after hitting a single in the 11th inning of a tight game. His baserunning aided the Astros to a 7-6 victory, and they ultimately won the series in seven games.

2016: Francisco Lindor, Cleveland

Francisco Lindor made a notable steal at the start of Game 1, leading the Indians to a 6-0 win over the Chicago Cubs at Progressive Field. His achievement even caught the attention of former President Barack Obama. However, the Cubs emerged as the series champions in seven games.

2015: Lorenzo Cain, Kansas City Royals

Lorenzo Cain stole second base during the sixth inning of Game 1, leading the Royals to a 5-4 win against the New York Mets. That year, Taco Bell offered free A.M. Crunchwraps, corresponding with the “Steal a Base, Steal a Breakfast” promotion, as the Royals went on to win the series 4-1.

“Who wants Taco Bell?” Cain playfully said afterwards, offering to cover the taco cost.

2012: Ángel Pagán, San Francisco Giants

Ángel Pagán stole a base in the eighth inning, which contributed to the Giants’ 2-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 2 of the World Series. In addition to giving people free tacos, Pagán helped serve them at a Taco Bell restaurant. The Giants completed a sweep of the Tigers.

2008: Jason Bartlett, Tampa Bay Rays

Jason Bartlett stole second base in the fifth inning during Game 1, although the Rays lost 3-2 to the Phillies. The Philadelphia team went on to win the series 4-1.

2007: Jacoby Ellsbury, Boston Red Sox

In Game 2 of the 2007 World Series, Jacoby Ellsbury was the first “Taco Hero,” stealing second base to help the Red Sox secure a 2-1 victory against the Rockies. Boston ultimately won the series, sweeping the Fall Classic.
