Leonardo DiCaprio has officially made his choice in the upcoming presidential election in the U.S.

The Oscar-winning actor and star of “Killers of the Flower Moon” shared an Instagram video on Friday in which he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, expressing his worries about climate change. He began by mentioning hurricanes Helene and Milton.

“Let’s be clear: These devastating events were driven by climate change,” DiCaprio stated. “Donald Trump refuses to acknowledge the reality. He disregards science and pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accords, reducing vital environmental safeguards.”

He added, “Climate change is endangering our planet and disrupting our economy. We urgently need to advance in order to protect our economy, our environment, and our lives. That’s why I support Kamala Harris.”

He highlighted that Harris has “played a pivotal role in the most significant climate initiative in U.S. history, which includes the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. Under her guidance, we set ambitious goals to attain net-zero emissions by 2050 and foster a green economy that creates jobs while protecting our environment.”

DiCaprio wrapped up his message by urging viewers to verify their voting registration at IWillVote.com.

“Join me in casting your ballot for Kamala Harris on November 5th; we cannot afford to move backwards,” he concluded.

While Harris has consistently labeled climate change a “crisis,” Trump has consistently dismissed climate change’s existence and spread misinformation about climate science, including claims that have been disproved by YSL News and other fact-checking organizations.

During his presidency, Trump’s climate measures involved withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, a global effort to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He also relaxed regulations on domestic emissions control, an action that one 2020 study estimated could release an additional 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

In the administration of President Joe Biden, where Harris serves as vice president, climate policies included casting the crucial vote for the Inflation Reduction Act – significant legislation targeting climate change. However, the vice president has also shown support for elements within the bill that promote fossil fuel leasing on federal lands, along with the Biden-Harris administration’s unprecedented increase in domestic oil production.

DiCaprio, who founded a foundation aimed at funding environmental initiatives and activism, has frequently used his platform to advocate for environmental causes.

During his 2016 Academy Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor, DiCaprio remarked, “Climate change is real; it is happening now. It is the greatest urgent threat facing humanity, and we need to work together and stop delaying action.”
