Targeted Anti-Trans Campaigns Spark Controversy and Concern Among Advocates

Recent blitz of anti-trans ads attacks Harris. Advocates question their effectiveness, call them harmful. Unveiling the Cincy Book Bus: Ohio’s Charming Literary Adventure from a Vintage Volkswagen

Discover Cincy Book Bus, the Ohio bookstore that started from a 1962 Volkswagen

Independent local bookstores play a vital role today. At a time when access to literature faces challenges, these shops stand firm against censorship and serve as valuable resources for their communities.

Every week, we spotlight a different independent bookstore, exploring their unique appeal and gathering their top book recommendations.

In this edition, we feature Melanie Moore, the owner of Cincy Book Bus located in Cincinnati, Ohio!

Can you share the story behind your store?

Cincy Book Bus has been promoting reading in Cincinnati for five years. Founded by a former teacher with a vision, the store initially operated out of a retired 1962 Volkswagen transporter and has since expanded into a physical bookstore catering to customers nationwide.

What sets your independent bookstore apart?

With 25 years of teaching experience in low-income neighborhoods, I saw the necessity of providing books directly to children. I use all profits from my store to purchase new children’s books, which I then donate to local schools and organizations. My goal is to ensure that kids in need have access to books.

Which section of your store is your favorite?

I particularly love the “Book Bus Exclusives” section. These exclusive titles are hard to find locally. I collaborate with international publishers to bring these special books to my store, making them accessible to our customers without the need for a passport.

What book do you frequently recommend to your customers and why?

My top recommendation is “The Book Bus.” I co-authored this children’s book with Brian Wray, and Mike Helm illustrated the tale of how an old truck on a cherry farm in Colorado transformed into The Book Bus, sharing the joy of reading wherever it goes.

Which book do you believe deserves more recognition and why?

“These Silent Woods” by Kimi Cunningham Grant stands out to me. It’s more than just a mystery; it’s a remarkable work of literature with profound character development. The story captivated me, and I became deeply invested in the characters and their relationships.

Why is it important to shop at local, independent bookstores?

Local bookstores are the backbone of the community. They bring people together, fostering a sense of unity through a shared love of books. Every independent bookstore contributes back to its community. When you support one, you’re not just buying a book; you’re making an investment in your local area.

Are there any upcoming programs or partnerships for your store this quarter you’d like to highlight?

We’re entering Pop-Up season! The Book Bus will soon be on the road again, setting up at local coffee shops and markets.
