Emerging Contenders: Analyzing Week 9’s Predictions for the 12-Team College Football Playoff Field

Updated College Football Playoff Odds and Predictions for the 12-Team Field After Week 9

As we wrap up nine weeks of the 2024 college football season, the picture for the College Football Playoff is becoming more defined regarding which teams are likely to qualify for the expanded 12-team playoff.

This past week, No. 3 Penn State and No. 4 Ohio State maintained their strong positions as favorites to reach the College Football Playoff, according to BetMGM, by avoiding potential upsets against Wisconsin and Nebraska.

A significant shift in the CFP odds was marked by LSU’s upset loss to No. 14 Texas A&M, which impacted their chances significantly; they now hold +225 odds for making the 12-team playoff.

The upcoming 2025 College Football Playoff will be a historic expansion, moving beyond the traditional four-team format for the first time.

This new format will grant the four highest-ranked conference champions a first-round bye, while the next highest-ranked conference champion will receive an automatic bid, followed by at-large selections to fill out the field. For the first time, playoff games will also be hosted at the home sites of seeds 5-8, facing seeds 9-12.

Here’s the up-to-date outlook on which teams are considered favorites for the 2025 College Football Playoff:
