Is NFL Going to Fine Nick Bosa for Wearing a MAGA Hat? Understanding the Rules on Possible Penalties
Nick Bosa, the defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers, is making news not just for his game performance, but for his actions off the field during the team’s 30-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
Bosa interrupted NBC reporter Melissa Stark’s live postgame interview with players Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and Isaac Guerendo while sporting a “Make America Great Again” hat. He drew attention to the hat – associated with former President Donald Trump – before heading to the locker room.
His teammates reacted with surprise and amusement, especially Kittle, while Stark appeared taken aback by the interruption.
“Alright, Nick Bosa with a message there,” Stark commented following the interruption.
During the postgame press conference, reporters inquired about Bosa’s political statement, but he was rather vague in his reply.
“I won’t say much about it, but it’s a significant time,” Bosa replied.
Did Nick Bosa Break NFL Rules by Wearing a MAGA Hat on the Field?
Bosa’s display of the “Make America Great Again” hat postgame did breach NFL regulations, which means he could potentially face a fine.
The specific rule he violated is outlined in Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 of the NFL rulebook:
“During any time on game day when players are visible to the stadium and TV audiences (including pregame warm-ups, on the bench, and during postgame interviews), players are not allowed to wear or display personal messages, unless previously approved by the league office. Items intended to mark anniversaries or honor individuals, like helmet decals and jersey patches, are also not allowed unless approved in advance. The league does not permit any team or player to convey messages related to political causes or other non-football events through items like helmet decals or uniform patches. Additionally, any approved items need to be modest, tasteful, and must not be used for more than one football season.”
Moreover, NFL policies specify that any visible gear worn by players on game day must be provided by the team or the league, otherwise they need prior approval from the League office.
“During game-day periods where players are visible to the stadium and TV audiences (including pregame warm-ups), all players must dress professionally according to uniform standards. The helmets and protective gear mentioned in the rules are designed to protect players while ensuring the safety of others on the field. Players are expected to maintain an appearance that represents their teams and the NFL appropriately. The term ‘uniform’ pertains to every piece of equipment a player wears, such as helmets, shoulder pads, and any visible items of clothing, including pants, jerseys, gloves, and headwear. All visible game-day items must be issued by the club or league, or otherwise have league approval.
Will Nick Bosa Be Fined for Donning the MAGA Hat?
Ultimately, the NFL has the final say on whether Bosa will face disciplinary action, as he indeed breached Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 of the NFL’s rulebook.
The NFL has yet to provide any comments regarding this situation.
