Expanded Recall: Dynacare Baby Powder Linked to Asbestos Affects 1,000 Cases Across 35 States

Dynacare’s Baby Powder recall due to asbestos contamination increased to 1,000 cases across 35 states. View the map.

Originally recalling 62 cases in 12 states, the recall now includes 1,020 cases in 35 states as of Monday, following routine FDA testing.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has broadened a recall alert for a baby powder due to potential asbestos contamination.

First announced on September 19, Dynarex Corporation’s initial recall involved 62 cases of Dynacare Baby Powder. As of Monday, the recall has been upgraded to involve 1,020 cases, which were distributed to 35 states as opposed to the original 12 states listed.

The FDA recall alert indicates that asbestos is a natural mineral known to cause cancer.

Asbestos can often be found in proximity to talc, an ingredient commonly used in cosmetic products, as stated by the agency.

According to the FDA alert, “If talc mining sites are poorly selected or not properly processed, the talc could be contaminated with asbestos.”

What led to the recall?

Dynarex Corporation stated in the recall notification, “The recall resulted from routine sampling by the FDA, which found that the finished products contained asbestos. Additional product lots were identified in further investigations as potentially containing asbestos due to the same bulk talc material used.”

The company has ceased distribution of the products and is conducting an inquiry to find out how the talc became contaminated.

Dynarex Corporation has confirmed that there have been no reports of illnesses or negative reactions to the baby powder.
