Director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical/” Wizard of Oz” prequel stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West. As an awkward student at magical Shiz University, she befriends the popular Glinda ( Ariana Grande ), butts heads with the corrupt Wizard ( Jeff Goldblum ) and finds new confidence.

Aulii Cravalho, the title seafarer, reprises her musical journey with her evil demigod friend Maui ( Dwayne Johnson ). With a new crew and new songs by Grammy Award winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Moana wades into dangerous waters in the sequel after being surprised by her ancestors ‘ call to action.
‘ September 5’ ( Nov. 29 )
The true-life ( and extremely timely ) journalism thriller is set during 24 intense hours at the 1972 Munich Olympics. An ABC Sports producer ( John Magaro ) makes an effort to tell the truth when a Palestinian terrorist organization kidnaps Israeli team members and confronts internal struggles and obstacles outside.
‘ The Order ‘ ( Dec. 6 )
Based on a true story, director Justin Kurzel’s crime thriller features Jude Law as a world-weary FBI agent newly posted to the Pacific Northwest. He’s supposed to relax, but instead he joins a young Oregon police officer ( Tye Sheridan ) in a fight against a neo-Nazi group led by Nicholas Hoult.
‘ Kraven the Hunter ‘ ( Dec. 13 )
The latest in Sony’s Marvel universe introduces Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title Spider-Man antagonist. With Ariana DeBose playing the voodoo priestess Calypso and Alessandro Nivola playing the villainous Rhino, Kraven’s upbringing under a ruthless crime lord father ( Russell Crowe ) and his quest to become the world’s greatest hunter are the central themes of the origin story.
‘ Nickel Boys ‘ ( Dec. 13 )
Director RaMell Ross adapts Colson Whitehead’s best-selling book with a distinctive first-person perspective. Elwood ( Ethan Herisse ) relies on Turner ( Brandon Wilson ) to survive abuse and brutality in the Jim Crow South, where his college dreams are shattered when he is sent to a corrupt reform school.
‘ The Brutalist ‘ ( Dec. 20 )
In Brady Corbet’s expansive epic, Adrien Brody portrays a talented Hungarian architect who survives the Holocaust and pursues the American dream. He arrives in Pennsylvania and begins working on a massive, visionary building project that is filled with passion as well as tumult. He appoints his wife ( Felicity Jones ) from Europe.
‘ Mufasa: The Lion King ‘ ( Dec. 20 )
The musical drama serves as both a sequel and a prequel, with Lin-Manuel Miranda songs as its lead. The orphan lion Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre ), who is best friends with Prince Taka ( Kelvin Harrison Jr. ), is adopted by his family, is the subject of the film’s origin story.
‘ Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ ( Dec. 20 )
That sneaker-clad blue speedster based on the video games is back for an animated threequel. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz ) and his buds Knuckles ( Idris Elba ) and Tails ( Colleen O’Shaughnessey ) need to find extra help to defend Earth when the superpowered mystery villain Shadow ( Keanu Reeves ) shows up.

In the romantic thriller, Nicole Kidman plays a CEO who meets a young intern ( Harris Dickinson ) as part of her company’s mentoring program. They start a wild affair that gives her a new sense of freedom, but their secretive bickering and shifting power dynamics put their careers and families in jeopardy.
‘ A Complete Unknown ‘ ( Dec. 25 )
With his newest biopic about Bob Dylan,” Walk the Line,” director James Mangold addresses another renowned musician. In the early 1960s, Timothée Chalamet plays the folk singer-songwriter who makes friends with other artists like Joan Baez ( Monica Barbaro ) and helps organize a cultural movement.
‘ The Fire Inside ‘ ( Dec. 25 )
Written and produced by Barry Jenkins, the true-life sports drama stars actress/singer Ryan Destiny as boxer Claressa Shields. The fight for equal pay that followed the fighter’s relationship with a tough-love coach ( Brian Tyree Henry ), her Olympic bid for gold, and the ensuing struggle for equal pay.

Robert Eggers ‘ gothic remake of the 1922 silent classic ( based on Bram Stoker’s novel” Dracula” ) features Lily-Rose Depp as the haunted young Ellen Hutter, Nicholas Hoult as her husband Thomas and Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, the creepy vampire obsessed with Ellen.
