Dick Van Dyke Makes Strong Civil Rights Statement While Endorsing Presidential Candidate
Add iconic actor Dick Van Dyke to the growing list of public figures supporting Vice President Kamala Harris.
The 98-year-old performer declared his endorsement for the Democratic presidential hopeful on his YouTube channel on Monday, just one day before the election on Tuesday.
Reflecting on his past, Van Dyke recalled a pivotal moment from 1964 during his video message: “On May 31, 1964, I joined Dr. Martin Luther King on stage at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.” He explained he was there to deliver a message penned by Rod Serling, the creator of “The Twilight Zone.” Van Dyke noted the speech’s relevance today: “I think it means just as much now, if not more, so I would like to share it with you.”
In his video, Van Dyke read excerpts from Serling’s “A Most Non-Political Speech,” delivered during a 1964 event called Religious Witness for Human Dignity, which came almost a year after King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
“Hatred is not a default state. Prejudice isn’t the norm either. Feelings of suspicion, jealousy, and scapegoating are not the best qualities of humanity. These attitudes are like diseases,” Van Dyke read aloud. “They are harmful to the soul and have plagued humanity for centuries. But just because these issues exist, does that mean they have to continue? I believe not.”
Van Dyke went on to share a powerful message from the speech: “To those who maintain that inequality among people is unavoidable, we need to say firmly that it’s not only wrong, but also unnecessary. We demonstrate this by holding on to our beliefs and faith.”
He concluded with encouraging words: “We should feel embarrassed to live without achieving that victory.”
Reflecting on progress since 1964, he mentioned, “Much has changed, though not nearly enough as Dr. King envisioned, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
Dick Van Dyke’s Endorsement Goes Viral on Social Media
Van Dyke’s video has gained considerable attention on his social media platforms.
While some followers expressed disappointment, claiming they “lost all respect” for him or suggesting “Hollywood should stay out of politics,” there were many who praised the actor for advocating “for a fair and equal society.”
“Dick has been a fierce advocate against racism for years!” exclaimed one Instagram user.
Another commenter on X noted: “If you’re surprised by this, you clearly weren’t paying attention all along.”
Numerous celebrities are backing Harris, including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, Eminem, Jennifer Lopez, Bon Jovi, Julia Roberts, and Harrison Ford.
In contrast, Trump has garnered support from several influential conservatives, including Jason Aldean, Caitlyn Jenner, Savannah Chrisley, and Billy Ray Cyrus.
