Puppy Power: My Secret to Thriving on Election Day

How I’m Getting Through Election Day: Lots of Puppies!

WASHINGTON – No matter who you’re supporting, Election Day can be pretty stressful. But don’t worry! I’ve found the perfect remedy to help calm your nerves.

The YSL News team was excited to host six adorable poodle puppies from Wolf Trap Animal Rescue, a local organization dedicated to saving animals from dire situations such as neglect and euthanasia. They’ve made a significant impact in their nine years, rescuing over 20,000 pets.

Romina Ruiz-Goiriena, the Politics Managing Editor at YSL News, led my colleagues and me to a cozy corner of the newsroom after hinting at a “surprise” for Election Day. In a year full of unexpected events, this was the best surprise we could have imagined. Well, at least until the polls close. Woof.

As Election Day continued, my anxiety began to creep back. I tried to ease my nerves by going for an early run, but seeing the autumn leaves fluttering down in the chilly weather made it harder to focus. I was breathing, but not with any sense of calm.

The moment I held a beautiful brown puppy in my arms, everything changed. I gave it a gentle squeeze, allowing the warmth and cuteness to wash over me. I couldn’t resist kissing its little face and inhaling its fresh puppy scent. “Awws” surrounded me as many of my fellow reporters and newsroom staff took turns cuddling the adorable pups. It’s no wonder these little creatures can help us feel better; studies show that animals can reduce cortisol levels and lower blood pressure, according to the NIH.

“Just holding them really helps,” shared Jenny Campanilla, the adoption coordinator and veterinary assistant at Wolf Trap. Talking to puppies is also beneficial, although these particular pups didn’t seem interested in chatting back with me.

After returning to my desk, I felt my anxiety creeping back in. I yearned to hold a puppy once more. I even quickly texted my boyfriend a photo – the biggest hint ever that it’s time for us to adopt a dog!

Overall, the best thing about having puppies around on Election Day? They’re indifferent to your political choices – all they care about is spreading love.
