Kirk Herbstreit shares the sad news about his beloved golden retriever Ben: ‘We had to let him go’
Kirk Herbstreit, an analyst for ESPN football, announced the passing of his cherished golden retriever, Ben, who was well-known at college football games, due to a battle with illness.
“It’s very difficult to write this, but so many of you have cared for Ben that I felt it was important to share the news. Today we discovered that the cancer had spread through Ben’s organs, and there was nothing more we could do – we had to let him go,” Herbstreit shared on social media on Thursday.
The announcement was met with a flood of loving tributes and prayers from fans.
Over the years, Ben became a beloved figure in sports media, appearing alongside Herbstreit on the College GameDay set, on the field during pre-game rituals, and even in the broadcast booth. He was so well-loved in the football community that he received press credentials for games and was named the “chief happiness officer” for the 2024 Rose Bowl. He also made memorable appearances with dog mascots like Uga and Reveille.
Ben’s last appearance was at Kyle Field during the Texas A&M vs. LSU game on October 26.
Sadly, Ben had been unwell and couldn’t travel as frequently this football season. On Monday, Herbstreit reported that Ben was receiving treatment for cancer and had lost the ability to use his hind legs. After spending Monday night at a veterinary hospital, he was set for another round of Vitamin C treatment in hopes of “flushing out toxins from his body and giving him a chance.”
As the oldest of the family’s four golden retrievers, Herbstreit described this experience as “one of the hardest things I’ve faced in my life.”
“I’ve had dogs throughout my life, but Ben was truly special,” Herbstreit reflected. “He was intelligent, loving, gentle, patient, curious, and welcoming to everyone. He always had a big smile and a friendly wagging tail. We shared an understanding and a strong bond. He was my companion on both home and work travels. It’s a tough day, but his spirit will remain in our hearts forever. God bless his wonderful soul and thank you for the joy he brought to my life over the last decade—a true blessing.”
“Love you, Ben.”
Herbstreit was commentating on the “Thursday Night Football” game featuring the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals on Prime Video.
