Israeli Soccer Fans Attacked in Amsterdam; Rescue Planes En Route

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been briefed on a “violent incident” involving Israelis in Amsterdam, as reported by his office.

CAIRO — In response to a “very violent incident” targeting Israeli citizens in Amsterdam, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the immediate dispatch of two rescue planes, according to his office on Friday. This decision follows reports of attacks connected to a soccer match.

Israel’s national security ministry has advised its citizens in Amsterdam to remain in their hotels after these assaults, as stated in a follow-up announcement from the prime minister’s office.

Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir condemned the attack on fans attending the football match, noting that they faced severe anti-Semitic violence simply because of their Jewish identity and connection to Israel, as he posted on X.

Amsterdam authorities reported the detention of 57 people post-match, where pro-Palestinian demonstrators attempted to approach the Johan Cruyff Stadium, despite being prohibited from protesting in that area. While fans exited the stadium without issues, various clashes arose in the city’s center.

The Israeli military has announced its preparation for a rescue mission, in collaboration with the Dutch government, following the Europa League match where Ajax Amsterdam triumphed over Maccabi Tel Aviv with a score of 5-0.

“The operation will utilize cargo planes and include medical and rescue personnel,” stated the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Social media videos captured panic in the streets, showing individuals fleeing and a man being assaulted.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reached out to his Dutch counterpart, Caspar Veldkamp, requesting assistance to ensure the safe transit of Israeli citizens to the airport. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to provide a comment on these claims from Israel.

Since the Hamas assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of over 250, tensions have been escalated both in the Middle East and internationally.

Health officials in Gaza report that at least 43,469 Palestinians have died and 102,561 have been injured due to Israel’s military operations, launched in retaliation for the Hamas attacks. This ongoing conflict has incited protests supporting both sides throughout Europe and the United States, leading to violence against Arabs and Jews alike.

Geert Wilders, an anti-Muslim politician and leader of the largest party in the Dutch parliament, expressed his condemnation of the attacks in Amsterdam, saying he feels “ashamed that this can happen in The Netherlands. Totally unacceptable,” in a post on X.
