Miami Marlins appoint Los Angeles Dodgers’ first base coach Clayton McCullough as new manager

The Miami Marlins have chosen Clayton McCullough, the first base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, to be their new manager, according to several reports on Sunday.

McCullough, 44, has been part of the Dodgers organization in various capacities since 2014. He also has experience managing within the Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league system from 2007 to 2014.

During his time in the minors, he achieved a record of 402 wins and 357 losses across different levels, including the Gulf Coast League and both Class-A and Advanced-A categories.

While with the Dodgers, McCullough worked alongside Gabe Kapler, the former manager of the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants, who is currently the assistant general manager for the Marlins.

He is recognized for enhancing Shohei Ohtani’s speed on the bases, contributing to Ohtani’s historic 50-50 season in 2024, which included 59 stolen bases and 54 home runs. Additionally, during the 2023 Home Run Derby, McCullough assisted Mookie Betts, who called him his “favorite coach ever.”

In October, McCullough and the Dodgers secured the World Series title.

The Marlins are making this change as they part ways with Skip Schumaker, following a challenging season where they finished with a record of 62 wins and 100 losses.

As a player, McCullough was a catcher in the minor leagues within the Cleveland organization but never advanced to Major League Baseball.
