Who has Trump chosen for his Cabinet so far? Recent selections include Rep. Mike Waltz

President-elect Donald Trump is quickly assembling his cabinet for his upcoming second term, selecting trusted associates as advisors and Cabinet officials.

In just one week after the election victory, Trump has appointed at least seven individuals to key positions. On Monday, he revealed Stephen Miller as his deputy chief of staff for policy, tapped former New York Congressman Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, and selected Florida Rep. Mike Waltz as national security adviser.

Trump has not yet officially appointed two of his campaign allies, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and billionaire Elon Musk, although both are anticipated to take roles in the administration.

Here’s what you need to know about Trump’s new administration:

Trump’s appointments so far: Key details

  • Chief of Staff: Trump has chosen his senior campaign advisor, Susie Wiles, as White House chief of staff, making her the first woman to hold this position. The Florida-based political consultant often works behind the scenes but has been recognized for her contributions to Trump’s successful political resurgence.
  • Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy: Long-time Trump advisor Stephen Miller has been selected as deputy chief of staff for policy in the next administration. At 39, he previously served as a senior advisor and director of speechwriting during Trump’s first term, and is known for influencing Trump’s immigration policy.
  • Ambassador to the United Nations: Trump has nominated Elise Stefanik, a five-term Republican from a northern New York district, for the role of UN ambassador. She currently serves as the House Republican Conference Chair and previously considered as a potential running mate for Trump.
  • Border Czar: Tom Homan has been appointed to manage deportation policy and aviation security. Homan, a former Border Patrol agent with over 34 years of experience, previously served as acting ICE director under Trump, where he was known for implementing strict immigration policies, including one that separated families of undocumented immigrants.
  • EPA Administrator: Lee Zeldin has been named the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Zeldin, a former Congressman from parts of Long Island, New York, ran unsuccessfully against Kathy Hochul in the 2022 gubernatorial election.
  • National Security Adviser: Trump has appointed Florida Rep. Mike Waltz as national security adviser. Waltz has held positions at the Pentagon, served on the House Armed Services Committee, and shares Trump’s isolationist perspective on foreign relations.

Marco Rubio anticipated to become Secretary of State: reports

According to reports from the New York Times and CNN, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida is likely to be appointed as Secretary of State.

Rubio is the leading Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee and was a strong contender to be Trump’s running mate in the past. If appointed, he would be the first Latino to hold this prominent position.

Kristi Noem likely to be named Homeland Security Secretary

Reports, including those from CNN and the Washington Post, suggest that South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is likely to be appointed as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Noem, the first female governor of South Dakota and a former congresswoman, was previously considered for a vice-presidential nomination, but she faced backlash following an admission in her memoir where she stated that she had shot and killed her dog for being “untrainable.”
