NCT DREAM dives into the ‘DREAMSCAPE’: Insights on their new album, themes, and songwriting

Since their debut in 2016, NCT DREAM has seamlessly integrated the theme of dreams and youthful positivity into their identity.

“The term ‘dream’ has meant so much to us and our fans that we incorporate it everywhere possible, from our albums to our concert titled ‘The Dream Show’ and even in the lyrics of our songs,” explains Mark, the group leader, at 25. “It has truly become part of who we are.”

In March, NCT DREAM launched “DREAM()SCAPE,” an exploration of the darker aspects of reality versus dreams.

“‘DREAM()SCAPE’ delves into the negative feelings inherent in our lives,” Mark shares with YSL News. “As NCT DREAM, we’ve generally maintained a cheerful image. Yet, even in dreams, one can encounter nightmarish situations.”

The EP not only achieved a spot in Billboard’s Top 10 Album Sales but also topped the Korean Circle Album chart, shining a light on the struggles of growing up. Now with “DREAMSCAPE”, released recently, the group is shifting back towards an upbeat vibe.

“Following ‘DREAM()SCAPE’, we’ve now stepped into ‘DREAMSCAPE,’ which is all about paradise and joy,” Mark remarks.

Exploring the ‘DREAMSCAPE’

The release of “DREAMSCAPE” comes shortly after the U.S. leg of NCT’s DREAM third world tour, The Dream Show 3: Dream()scape, which concluded in late September.

During their seven U.S. shows, member Renjun, age 24, was absent due to health reasons. “DREAMSCAPE” signifies his return.

This 11-track album marks NCT DREAM’s fourth complete release.

“It’s essentially a continuation of the ‘DREAM()SCAPE’ project, but now we are erasing all of those negative feelings,” explains Mark. “Paradise represents a realizable joy that’s actually closer than we think. With ‘DREAMSCAPE’, we hope to guide our listeners back to our original positive essence.”

The album’s lyrics navigate the intricacies of love, dreams, and overcoming fears.

As time goes on, the members have become increasingly involved in the creative side of their music. For this album, both Mark and Haechan contributed to the writing of several songs.

“As we mature, our thoughts and feelings evolve. We don’t deliberately set out to show our growth in our music, but we believe it’s crucial to reflect what we are capable of based on who we’ve become,” adds Haechan, 24.

The value of connection

<p”DREAMSCAPE” reflects NCT DREAM’s distinct style, highlighted by genre blends of electro-pop, disco, ballads, and 80s synth.

“We’ve experimented with a variety of genres and styles in our music so far. Now, we aim to create tracks that truly represent only what NCT DREAM can offer,” states Jeno, 24.

Another vital element of “DREAMSCAPE” is how the band uses its lyrics to form a bond with their audience.

“Connection with our fans is paramount,” Renjun remarks. “Our music has the remarkable ability to empower and inspire people.”

This philosophy plays a significant role in NCT DREAM’s evolution as artists and individuals.

“Throughout our journey together, I’ve matured, particularly through interactions with our fans. I’ve learned valuable life lessons from engaging with them during meet-and-greets,” reflects Jisung, 22.

NCT DREAM’s goals for the future

NCT DREAM views “DREAMSCAPE” and the current year as a means for growth. In December, they’re anticipated to perform at select shows in iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball Tour, with stops in Los Angeles and New York City.

“Personally, I sense a lot of changes coming in 2024. I believe this will be a year full of new positive opportunities for us.”

“We’re putting in our utmost effort at every moment,” shares Jaemin, age 24.

Chenle, 22, supported Jaemin’s views, stating that the group intends to keep producing music that truly represents them.

“This album embodies our unique styles but reflects our current selves, which I believe gives it a fresh perspective. I think this will define our direction heading into 2024, and I personally can’t wait for this album to elevate us to the next stage,” says Mark.
