What is the best start in NBA history? Three teams ahead of the Cavaliers’ 14-0 record
No pressure, just aiming for perfection.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have made an impressive start to the season, currently boasting a flawless 14-0 record under the guidance of new coach Kenny Atkinson. They are now one of just six teams in NBA history to win their first 14 games. As of Friday, the Cavaliers had the second-best offense in the league (120.9 points per game) and were the top team for 3-point shooting accuracy (41.2%). Additionally, they rank second in point differential (11.7), trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder (12.7).
However, the Cavaliers are still not at the top of the NBA’s best-ever starts; three other teams have better records. The silver lining for Cleveland is that out of the five teams that also started with 14 consecutive victories in a season, four made it to the NBA Finals.
Here’s a quick rundown on the best starts in NBA history.
What is the record for the best start in NBA history?
The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors hold the distinction for the best start in NBA history, going on to achieve the most wins in a single season (73). They kicked off their season with an extraordinary 24-0 record before suffering their first defeat on December 12 against the Bucks, breaking the previous record held by the 1993-94 Houston Rockets who started at 15-0.
Interestingly, this remarkable start wasn’t under coach Steve Kerr’s leadership due to his recovery from back surgery; assistant coach Luke Walton took over and guided the team to that stunning 24-0 figure before Kerr’s return, ultimately finishing with a 39-4 record.
In the end, the 2015-16 Warriors were defeated in the NBA Finals by the Cavaliers in seven games.
