Joe Biden removes restrictions on Ukraine using US weapons to hit Russian territory

WASHINGTON, Nov 17 (Reuters) – President Joe Biden’s administration has lifted the restrictions that previously prevented Ukraine from utilizing U.S.-provided military equipment to target areas deep within Russian territory. This marks a notable shift in U.S. policy regarding the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, according to three sources close to the situation.

Sources indicated that Ukraine is preparing to initiate its first long-range operations in the coming days, although specific details are being withheld for security reasons.

The White House has not issued any comments on this development.

This decision by the United States comes just over two months ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20 and follows persistent appeals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who requested permission for Ukraine’s military to utilize U.S. weaponry against Russian military installations situated far from Ukraine’s borders.

The policy change is prompted by Russia’s recent deployment of North Korean ground forces, which has raised concerns in both Washington and Kyiv.

The initial deep strikes are expected to utilize ATACMS rockets, which boast a range of up to 190 miles, according to the sources.

While some officials in the U.S. exhibit doubt regarding the effectiveness of long-range strikes in altering the overall dynamics of the war, this decision may bolster Ukraine’s position, especially as Russian forces continue to gain ground. It could also enhance Kyiv’s stance when potential ceasefire negotiations occur.

It remains uncertain whether Trump will seek to reverse Biden’s policy once he assumes office. Trump has consistently criticized the level of U.S. military and financial support for Ukraine and has promised to bring an end to the conflict quickly, though he has not detailed any strategy for doing so.

Nevertheless, several Congressional Republicans have encouraged Biden to relax the regulations governing the use of American weaponry by Ukraine.

Russia has issued warnings that any easing of restrictions on Ukraine’s use of U.S. weaponry would be viewed as a significant escalation of hostilities.
