Will Jaguars part ways with Doug Pederson? Head coach discusses his future after heavy defeat to Lions
The Jacksonville Jaguars kicked off the 2024 NFL season with big hopes, as emphasized by their 74-year-old owner, Shad Khan.
Unfortunately, the Jaguars have struggled to meet those hopes, and in Week 11, they experienced one of their most humiliating losses to date.
The Detroit Lions decimated the Jaguars 52-6 in a game that was decided long before halftime. Detroit managed to score on all four of their drives and outgained the Jaguars by an astonishing 475 yards during the game. This marks the largest yardage difference in a single NFL game since 1979, according to Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.
Following that defeat, the Jaguars head into their bye week with a dismal 2-9 record. This places them as the bottom team in the NFL this season, just below the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns, who each also have two wins. The Jaguars are now in prime position to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after Week 11.
Could this series of events spell the end for Doug Pederson? It increasingly appears that the Super Bowl-winning coach’s tenure may be coming to a close after the conclusion of the 2024 NFL season.
Is Doug Pederson’s job in jeopardy?
The Jaguars are likely gearing up to part ways with Doug Pederson sooner rather than later. The question now is when that decision will be made.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Sunday, Nov. 17, the prospects of change in the Jaguars organization are strong. With the team on bye in Week 12, adjustments could begin during this break.
“A painful loss, added to the existing troubles in Jacksonville, could signal the beginning of the end for Pederson,” Rapoport stated on NFL GameDay. “As one insider mentioned, ‘It’s a collective issue. Everyone has a role in this.'”
Clearly, the Jaguars’ 52-6 loss would be classified as “painful.” In addition, the team’s disintegration at the end of the 2023 NFL season was equally troubling, given they were positioned well for a playoff spot for the majority of that season. Moreover, this season, the Jaguars hold the league’s worst record and have lost five of their last six matches.
Khan had shown support for Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke earlier in the season. He highlighted then that despite the losses, the Jaguars were competitive and were exploring ways to assist Baalke and Pederson in achieving more victories.
Nevertheless, with losses accumulating and the team’s competitiveness waning, it seems the end is near for Pederson. The experienced coach recognizes this, as he conveyed after the game when asked if he felt he might have coached his last game with the Jaguars.
“I can’t influence that,” Pederson responded. “Honestly, I’ve been around this league for a while. If it’s going to happen, it will happen. Meanwhile, I still have a job to do, which is preparing for a good division rival in two weeks.”
Before long, we will find out if Pederson will be leading the Jaguars into their matchup against the Houston Texans.
