Trump Appoints Brendan Carr, Who Criticized Kamala Harris’ SNL Appearance, as FCC Chairman
WASHINGTON − On Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of Brendan Carr as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
In a statement on Truth Social regarding the appointment, Trump praised Carr, a leading Republican on the commission, calling him a “champion for Free Speech.”
Recently, Carr made news for criticizing NBC over Vice President Kamala Harris’s appearance on Saturday Night Live on November 2, claiming it breached the “equal time” rule that governs candidate appearances on TV.
“It seems like some leadership at NBC and SNL wanted to show preference for one candidate prior to the election,” Carr commented.
“NBC has set this up in a way that clearly tries to sidestep the FCC’s regulations,” Carr stated. “This took place just 50 hours before Election Day, and as far as I can tell, there was no notice given to other candidates.”
Following this, Trump had the opportunity to address viewers directly after an NBC broadcast of a Nascar race to ensure he received equal airtime.
Carr first joined the FCC during Trump’s previous administration in 2017. The FCC is made up of five members and is responsible for overseeing the telecommunications industry.
Carr has also shown his support for initiatives led by another Trump ally, billionaire Elon Musk, in securing subsidies for Musk’s satellite broadband internet service, according to Reuters.
