Eva Longoria clarifies she didn’t leave the U.S. due to Trump’s election
The Texas-born actress recently disclosed that she no longer lives in the U.S. full-time.
Eva Longoria clarified that her relocation isn’t tied to the recent presidential election results.
The Texas-native actress disclosed during an interview with Marie Claire that she has moved out of the U.S. for most of the year and emphasized that Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election did not affect her decision.
She addressed the topic during a conversation with “The View” co-host Ana Navarro, who was recording for the ABC show’s podcast “Behind the Table.”
“Please tell them I didn’t leave the U.S. because of Trump,” Longoria urged Navarro in a clip released on Friday, to which Navarro acknowledged that Longoria had moved abroad prior to Trump’s election.
Longoria explained, “I’ve been in Europe for nearly three years. The article mentions this, but people just took some sensationalist headlines and ran with them, which makes me really sad. It feels like every statement is twisted to create division when we should be working towards unity.”
In her discussion with Marie Claire, released on Wednesday, she mentioned she spends most of her time between Spain and Mexico. While her decision to relocate came before the heated electoral period, the election outcome intensified her feelings of “anxiety” for those remaining in the U.S.
Longoria commented, “I recognize my privilege in being able to leave and go elsewhere. Most Americans aren’t as fortunate. They will have to stay in this dystopian landscape, and my heart aches for them.”
In her chat with Navarro, Longoria concluded that her departure from the U.S. provided her with some relief from “the chaos” of American politics, stating, however, that her professional responsibilities were the primary reason for her relocation.
She remarked, “Being distanced from the relentless news cycle creates a certain bubble, definitely. But I moved to Europe because of work, not because of political circumstances.”
Eva Longoria perceives the U.S. as a ‘frightening place’ post-Trump victory
Longoria has been a consistent supporter of the Democratic party and spent part of her summer campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris. She expressed that Trump’s win contributes to her relief at being away from the U.S. at this time.
“If he fulfills his commitments, it will indeed be a scary environment,” Longoria shared with the magazine. “Even before the pandemic, things were different. The atmosphere shifted drastically with COVID-19.”
The “Flamin’ Hot” director, who shared feelings of “depression” following Trump’s 2016 election, expressed that she wasn’t entirely shocked by Trump’s major victory over Harris. “I truly believed that the most deserving candidate would win, but after that (2016 election), I realized that was not the case.”
She elaborated, “The surprising aspect of the current election is not his victory, but the fact that a convicted felon who spreads so much animosity could attain the highest position in the country.”
