Reports: Giants bench Daniel Jones, indicating potential end of QB’s tenure in New York
The New York Giants have confirmed that coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will return in 2025. However, it seems the team is likely parting ways with another significant player from their current roster.
Daboll has consistently supported Jones throughout this season, despite the struggles of the sixth-year veteran. Although Jones was replaced in the fourth quarter during a lopsided loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7, Daboll dismissed the idea of a full-time benching afterward.
After the Week 10 overtime defeat to the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Daboll mentioned that he never considered benching Jones during the first half of that game, but acknowledged that the team would look at their quarterback options.
Now, it seems Jones may have played his final game for the Giants.
The 27-year-old quarterback has two years left on his four-year, $160 million contract extension, signed in March 2023 after he recorded career highs in passing yards (3,205) and passer rating (92.5). Although his base salary is not guaranteed for the upcoming season, he has a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025. An additional $12 million of his $30 million salary next season will become guaranteed by March 16, creating a potential cutoff for his departure from the team.
This season, Jones has thrown for eight touchdowns and has seven interceptions. Notably, he went 672 days without a touchdown pass at MetLife Stadium before breaking that streak in Week 9 against the Washington Commanders.
DeVito has started six games during the current season when Jones was sidelined due to injuries.
