Release Date for College Football Playoff Rankings

The third set of College Football Playoff rankings for the 2024 season will be released on Tuesday, November 19. The selection committee publishes updated rankings every Tuesday until December 3. The selection show to determine the 12 teams for the playoff will occur on December 8.

Number of Teams in the 2024 College Football Playoff

This year marks the inaugural introduction of a 12-team format in the College Football Playoff. The CFP was first introduced in 2014 with only four teams. The expansion is set to take place during the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons, although officials have not finalized plans for future formats beyond that.

Understanding the CFP Format

The bracket for the College Football Playoff will include 12 teams: the five highest-ranked conference champions, along with the next seven highest-ranked teams according to the CFP selection committee.

The four top-ranked conference champions will be assigned seeds one through four and will automatically advance to the next round without playing in the first round. The fifth conference champion will be seeded based on its ranking among the top 12 or at No. 12 if it’s outside the top 12 in the rankings. Non-champion teams ranked in the top four will start at seed No. 5.

The CFP cautions on its website, “As a result, the seeding from 1 to 12 may differ from the final rankings.” During the first round, the higher-seeded team in each matchup (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9) will host the game at their home field. The winning teams will progress to the quarterfinals, facing the corresponding top-four seeded conference champions based on their seedings. The quarterfinals will be held at major bowl games like the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Semifinal matches, hosted at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl Classic, are scheduled for January 9-10.

The two teams that win in the semifinals will compete for the national championship on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. – Mark Giannotto
