Aaron Judge Enthusiastically Supports Yankees’ Pursuit of Free Agent Juan Soto: “It’s Not My Wallet!”

Aaron Judge Eager About Yankees Signing Juan Soto: ‘It’s Not My Money’

Aaron Judge, the American League MVP, has not spoken to Juan Soto since the conclusion of the World Series, choosing to give him space as he contemplates his free agency. However, he is not merely hoping for Soto to re-sign with the New York Yankees.

During his MVP conference call on Friday, Judge revealed that he had a conversation with Yankees managing partner Hal Steinbrenner a few weeks back, emphasizing the need to keep Soto to achieve back-to-back World Series appearances for the first time since 1998-2001.

“We talked about everything from Juan to other players who could help our team,” Judge stated. “I shared my thoughts on several matters. Honestly, it’s not my money; I just want us to have the best players. I’m good with whatever.”

Two years ago, Judge signed the most lucrative contract in Yankees history: a nine-year deal worth $360 million. In contrast, Soto aims for a contract of at least $600 million, as he is one of the most sought-after free agents in baseball.

Regardless of how large Soto’s contract may be, Judge insists he feels no envy.

“I’ve never been concerned about who gets the biggest paycheck,” Judge remarked. “All I want is to bolster our team with outstanding talent. That’s the key. Look at our clubhouse; Giancarlo Stanton set the tone.

“He signed the first big mega-contract in Miami (a 13-year, $325 million deal), but upon joining us, he didn’t care about being the highest-paid player. He simply wanted great teammates around him. Everyone in the clubhouse shares that mindset.”

Judge doesn’t have any insider knowledge about ongoing negotiations, just as Steinbrenner mentioned this week that he also doesn’t know where Soto will land. However, he values that Steinbrenner meets with him and veteran pitcher Gerrit Cole at least once per homestand to discuss the team’s status.

“I feel that everything relies on Hal,” Judge noted. “When I was a free agent at the end of ’22, one of the first things he mentioned was, ‘I genuinely want to build a relationship with you and have you remain a part of this. You’ll always be a Yankee.’ So he made it clear that I could share my thoughts and feelings about various matters because he isn’t in the clubhouse or on the field every day. Having that connection to discuss what I notice and feel about the team and other players is something I appreciate.

“Effective communication from the top down only enhances everyone’s performance, as we can speak openly about our observations and feelings. I find it enjoyable. It comes with being in a position like mine and also being the captain.

“The fact that they are listening and want to know our insights is pretty special.”

Although Judge was the one who protected Soto by hitting behind him in the lineup, he felt that Soto’s presence also elevated his own performance, allowing him to drive in a career-high 144 runs this year, surpassing the 131 runs he achieved in his first MVP season in 2022.

“Look at the Dodgers lineup, with three MVPs at the front: Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman,” Judge commented. “Facing three strong at-bats in succession is a challenge. Having Juan in front of me allows me to see a variety of pitches since he will consistently make it hard for the pitcher. That can really wear down a pitcher early in the game.

“Having a player like that in front of me made a significant impact.

“If I could have a lineup with eight Juan Sotos, I’d be all for it.”

At only 26, Soto knows just how pivotal he was to the Yankees. Judge made a point of reminding him throughout the season of his importance, believing there’s no need to reach out during this critical period.

“I haven’t gotten in touch with him at all,” Judge stated. “I think it’s best to give these players space. I communicated with him throughout the season, and he understands how we feel. Now, it’s crucial for him to reflect on his decisions with his family, pray about it, and choose what is best for his future and family. …

“We’ll catch up with him later.”
