FDA Alerts on Amazon Supplements: Recall Due to Drug Contamination

FDA recalls Amazon supplements due to drug contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of certain hyaluronic acid tablet supplements sold on Amazon.

The recall by MxBBB occurred after the FDA found that the Umary supplements were tainted with two common over-the-counter medications: diclofenac and omeprazole.

This is not the first instance this year of issues regarding Umary products. The FDA has released three alerts earlier this year advising consumers against purchasing these supplements, highlighting “potentially harmful undisclosed drug components not noted on the product label.”

The FDA confirmed in a statement that these products were available on Amazon. Here’s what you should know.

Which supplements are affected by the recall?

One specific batch of 30 850 mg Umary hyaluronic acid tablets is included in this recall. The affected bottles have a UPC of 7502265120323 and a lot number of 24183, with an expiration date of July 1, 2028.

The FDA indicates that 321 bottles have been distributed to customers.

“MXBBB is alerting its customers through Amazon and facilitating the return of all recalled items. Consumers who have the recalled Umary products should cease use and return them for a full refund,” according to the announcement.

What are diclofenac and omeprazole?

As per the FDA, diclofenac is categorized as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Such drugs can heighten the risk of heart attacks and strokes, along with causing severe gastrointestinal problems, including bleeding, ulceration, and a potential life-threatening perforation of the stomach and intestines.

“This undisclosed drug ingredient could also interact with other medications, significantly increasing the risk of harmful side effects, especially when consumers take multiple NSAID-containing products,” the FDA warned.

On the other hand, omeprazole is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which is typically used to address disorders related to gastric acid.

“This concealed ingredient may obscure stomach-related issues like erosion, ulcers, and even stomach cancer, and can interact with other medications. It should not be combined with certain drugs,” notified the FDA.
