Spoiler alert! This article contains plot spoilers for Episode 1 of Season 5 of “Yellowstone.”

The latter part of Season 5 of “Yellowstone” returns this Sunday with a fresh episode.

The Dutton children are grappling with the consequences of their father’s death, Governor John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner). The season kicked off at the governor’s mansion with emergency responders on the scene. Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes), his siblings, push through police barriers to witness the chaos, discovering a gun on the bathroom floor and bloodshed. While John’s face remains unseen on camera, his lifeless body is sprawled on the ground, leaving his children visibly devastated.

Costner portrayed John Dutton since the show’s debut on Paramount Network in 2018 but announced in June that he would not be appearing in what were said to be the final episodes. He was also absent from the many viewers catching up with the fan-favorite season premiere.

“I didn’t see it,” Costner shared on SiriusXM’s “The Michael Smerconish Program” earlier this month. “To be completely honest, I didn’t even know it aired last night. That’s the honest truth. I’ve seen ads showcasing my face everywhere and thought, ‘Wow, I’m not involved at all.’ This season isn’t mine.”

New episodes will be available every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Paramount Network.

Note that “Yellowstone” episodes cannot be streamed on Paramount+, as the platform has clarified that it’s not included in any subscription tiers. If you have access through your TV provider, you can log in to the Paramount Network to watch.

Beth Dutton will unleash her fury over John Dutton’s fate

In a conversation with YSL News before the release of Season 5, Part 2, Kelly Reilly, who portrays Beth Dutton, revealed that her character will be heartbroken once her father’s tragic fate is unveiled.

“A woman can only endure so much. He’s everything to her,” Reilly explained. “What will this do to her? She will become like a hurricane.”

Reilly indicated she has been aware of the intended conclusion of “Yellowstone” since the show’s inception in 2018. Costner’s unexpected exit has not significantly altered that plan. “It wasn’t meant to end this way, this quickly,” she noted. “But returning to the show’s true vision is genuinely gratifying.”
