Patrick J. Adams faced alcohol abuse and depression before leaving ‘Suits’
Patrick J. Adams has no regrets about leaving “Suits.”
While appearing on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, the 43-year-old actor explained his choice to exit the USA Network show after seven seasons. He noted that a major reason for his departure was his battle with alcohol addiction and mental health struggles.
“By the end of the seventh season, my mental health was suffering, and I was drinking too much,” he shared.
Adams expressed, “I was living an unexamined life, feeling quite miserable and depressed, and I lacked the tools to cope with that beyond throwing money around and drinking excessively, not knowing how to articulate my feelings.”
He acknowledged that he wasn’t actively addressing his depression at the time, leading him to conclude, “I need to go home, start working on myself, and make some changes.”
Although it took him “a few years” to make significant changes, he reached a “breaking point” when he recognized he wasn’t being the father he wanted to be, prompting him to quit drinking. He described giving up alcohol as “the best thing I ever did for myself.”
Adams portrayed Michael Ross in the legal drama, which aired for nine seasons and wrapped up in 2019. By Season 7’s conclusion, his character had tied the knot with Duchess Meghan’s Rachel Zane, and both Adams and Meghan departed the show. He made a brief comeback in the final season.
In 2023, the show saw a resurgence in popularity on Netflix, where it soared in the streaming rankings years after its series finale.
On “Dinner’s On Me,” Adams mentioned that another factor in his decision to leave “Suits” was that he felt his character’s arc had come to an end, leaving him with few compelling storylines to explore.
As a result, he noted that the “only reason” to remain on the show would be for financial gain.
“I recall a conversation with my mom, she pointed out, ‘If your only reason for staying is for money, then you should leave,'” he reflected.
Adams joked that he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night lamenting the lost earnings from not being part of the last two seasons. However, he asserted, “I’ve never regretted that decision; I knew it was the right one.”
In January, Adams reunited with his “Suits” co-stars Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, and Gina Torres at the Golden Globe Awards, although Duchess Meghan was not there. Torres shared with Variety that no one informed her about the reunion plans as “we don’t have her number.”
Currently, Adams is hosting “Sidebar,” a podcast that reviews “Suits,” alongside Rafferty. Recently, he mentioned on Reddit that although he and Duchess Meghan are “not really in touch,” she reached out when she learned about the podcast, sending him a “lovely text” expressing her excitement and offering help.
