Why Extra SSI Checks Are Arriving This November and February
Some individuals receiving Social Security may find themselves getting an extra check this month due to a peculiar calendar situation – it’s not an error.
A limited group of recipients will receive three payments for November because of a rare calendar pattern that determines when the payments are distributed. This specifically affects those who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Currently, over 7.4 million Americans benefit from Supplemental Security Income, which provides additional financial support to individuals who are disabled or have limited financial resources.
This month, due to how the calendar days fall in December, SSI recipients will receive their payment earlier than usual, on Friday, Nov. 29 – in addition to the two payments they received earlier in the month, as noted by the Social Security Administration’s schedule.
These unusual calendar patterns will persist through 2025, affecting payments scheduled for January, February, May, and August.
Here are the essential details and the payment schedule for 2025.
Understanding ‘Calendar Quirks’ and Their Effect on SSI Payments in the New Year
Several calendar oddities are likely to affect the timing and number of checks issued each month during the upcoming year as well.
SSI recipients will receive their first check of the new year on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, since the first business day in January 2025 falls on New Year’s Day, a federal holiday.
This payment pattern of receiving checks just before a new month will carry into February 2025, with SSI beneficiaries getting their March payment on Feb. 28. This means that SSI recipients will not receive a payment during March.
In May, SSI recipients will receive two checks because the payment for that month will be sent on Thursday, May 1, followed by the June payment on Friday, May 30. Consequently, there will be no payment for June. This two-check pattern will also repeat in August where SSI recipients will receive two checks but none for September.
What is SSI? A Brief Overview
SIP, or Supplemental Security Income, provides monthly financial assistance to eligible individuals aged 65 and older, those who are blind, have a qualifying disability, or have children with disabilities, as defined by the SSA’s official website.
Generally, qualifying adults have monthly work earnings below $1,971.
If you or someone you know suspects they might qualify for SSI, you can start the application process online, visit your local Social Security office, or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time during the weekdays.
