Mystery Lovers Bookshop has been serving mystery enthusiasts for over three decades
Local, independent bookstores play an essential role in our communities. As political pressures threaten open access to literature, these bookstores stand firm against censorship while enriching the areas they serve.
Every week, we highlight a unique independent bookstore, uncovering what sets them apart and presenting some of their top book picks.
This week, we chat with Tara Goldberg-DeLeo and Kristy Bodnar, the owners of Mystery Lovers Bookshop located in Oakmont, Pennsylvania!
What’s the story behind your store?
Mystery Lovers Bookshop was established in 1990 and has consistently upheld the founder’s vision of offering a varied selection of mystery books, alongside popular literary works, nonfiction, and children’s titles. We also honor the tradition of giving back to our community, supporting the local library, schools, sports teams, theater productions, and more. Our annual ‘ARC Fundraiser’ has successfully raised over $1,000 for the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh recently.
What makes your independent bookstore stand out?
Although we are the fifth owners since the store’s inception, we have maintained the beloved traditions that our customers cherish. Two of our staff members have worked here for over two decades, and many dedicated customers have been with us since the beginning! We take great pride in our community involvement, our collaboration with Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures, our role as a founding member of the Greater Pittsburgh Festival of Books, and our monthly Mysterious Book Subscription service for mystery fans!
Which section of your store is your favorite?
This is a challenging question! Can we say we love the entire store? Our children’s section is exceptional, and we strive to curate an inclusive selection while promoting both national and local authors. Our mystery wall features collections from beloved authors like Louise Penny, Martin Walker, Jacqueline Winspear, and Anna Lee Huber!
Which book do you often recommend to readers and why?
We frequently recommend “Daisy Darker” by Alice Feeney. It’s an engaging locked-door mystery full of unexpected twists—perfect for thrill-seekers. Additionally, Richard Osman, known for “The Thursday Murder Club,” has launched a new series, “We Solve Murders.” He’s a local favorite, and we’re excited for readers to discover his latest work!
Which book do you believe deserves more recognition and why?
This is tough, as we have an abundance of beloved titles. Still, “The House in the Cerulean Sea” by T.J. Klune is a must-read. It’s a touching narrative about acceptance and love, showcasing a unique family of magical children. You’ll grow fond of the characters and come away feeling uplifted.
Why should people shop at local, independent bookstores?
Supporting local businesses is vital to maintaining vibrant communities! Oakmont thrives with its local shops. We contribute to our library, community sports leagues, and schools. Large, impersonal corporate chains don’t take part in sponsoring our local events. We prioritize books and community well-being over corporate expansion.
Are there any upcoming programs or partnerships at your store this quarter that you’d like to highlight?
On December 14, we’re excited to host cartoonist Joe Wos for the launch of his book “Exploding Kittens Activities and Puzzles.”
