Margot Robbie’s Bold Stance on ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Nude Scene

Margot Robbie Declined to Wear a Robe During ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Nude Scene

Margot Robbie was bold about her body in her first significant film role.

The Oscar-nominated star of “Barbie,” aged 34, disclosed on the “Talking Pictures” podcast that she was adamant about going completely nude for a full-frontal scene in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Robbie recounted how the director suggested she wear a robe for her comfort, but she decided against it.

She recalled, “(Scorsese) said, ‘Maybe you can wear a robe if you’re feeling uneasy,’ and I responded, ‘That’s not what she would do in that moment. She wouldn’t put on a robe. The essence of the scene is that she’s appearing fully naked. That’s her strategy right now.’”

Robbie mentioned that a significant amount of footage was filmed for this movie, and there was a general feeling among the cast that “to be part of this film, you have to stand out on screen.”

In the movie, Robbie portrayed Naomi Lapaglia, a woman with whom Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) has an illicit relationship before marrying. In one memorable scene, Naomi entices Jordan by entering the room dressed only in stockings and shoes.

“The Wolf of Wall Street” marked Robbie’s rise to fame after her earlier roles in the Australian soap “Neighbours” and the ABC show “Pan Am.” The film received five Academy Award nominations, including one for DiCaprio as best actor.

While on “Talking Pictures,” Robbie shared her anxiety about explaining to her family that she had done a full-frontal nude scene.

She said, “My bigger fears weren’t necessarily, ‘How did I perform as an actress,’ but rather, ‘Oh boy, everyone will see this, and I hadn’t really considered that until now.’”

Following “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Robbie took on various roles, including a cameo in “The Big Short,” portraying Jane in “The Legend of Tarzan,” and playing Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad.” In 2018, she received her first Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”

Robbie was subsequently nominated for two more Oscars: for best supporting actress in “Bombshell” and best picture for “Barbie,” in which she both starred and produced. She operates LuckyChap Entertainment, a production company she launched with her husband, Tom Ackerley.

In addition to “Barbie,” LuckyChap has produced critically acclaimed films like “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn.” Upcoming projects from the company include films based on the games Monopoly and The Sims.
