Jameis Winston on interceptions: ‘Hoping the Lord will help me avoid pick-sixes’
During Monday night’s game, Jameis Winston made history for the Cleveland Browns by throwing for 497 yards, although his team ultimately lost to the Denver Broncos, 41-32.
Despite achieving four touchdown passes, it was the two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns — part of three interceptions in total — that weighed heavily on his mind following the game.
“I know I’m capable of better,” Winston expressed regarding the mistakes during a post-game conference. “I’m just praying for the Lord to save me from these pick-sixes.”
Winston’s first interception occurred in the second quarter when a pass intended for tight end Jordan Akins was intercepted by edge rusher Nik Bonitto, who dashed 71 yards for a touchdown, which put Denver ahead, 21-10. His second interception came in the fourth quarter as the Browns were down 34-32; Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian jumped in front of a route intended for Elijah Moore and ran it back for 44 yards. Shortly after, Winston was intercepted again by Broncos linebacker Cody Barton in the end zone after the Browns advanced to the 2-yard line following two long passes and a pass interference call.
The turnovers overshadowed an outstanding performance by the Browns’ offense, which achieved its highest scoring mark this season. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy recorded 235 receiving yards, marking a franchise best for a player against his previous team.
Winston expressed his regret to his teammates for contributing to the pick-sixes.
“It’s hard to win when you give up two defensive touchdowns,” Winston acknowledged. “The defense was solid. The offense functioned well. I didn’t perform up to standard.”
Winston’s 10-year NFL journey has been characterized by unpredictable performances. As the top pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, he set a record in 2019 with seven pick-sixes in a single season. That year, he also threw 30 interceptions, the seventh-highest total in NFL history, a mark that no quarterback had reached since 1989. However, he managed to lead the league with 5,109 passing yards and achieved a career-high of 33 touchdown passes.
After the Buccaneers signed Tom Brady, Winston joined the New Orleans Saints. He started only 10 games over the next four years due to a knee injury that cut short his attempt to reclaim a starting position. This offseason, he signed with the Browns as a backup, stepping up after Deshaun Watson was sidelined for the season because of an Achilles tear in October.
Entering this game, Winston had the highest interception rate (3.4%) among active players and committed to making improvements.
“I’m going to keep working,” Winston stated. “I will correct my mistakes. Mentally I won’t change, but physically, I will continue to improve and become better.”
