Exciting collaboration on the horizon from ‘When Harry Met Sally’ stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal
“It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic,” said Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, the beloved co-stars of “When Harry Met Sally.”
Fans of the classic 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally.” are buzzing with excitement after the film’s main actors revealed that they are joining forces for a new, “iconic” project.
In a joint Instagram post on Thursday, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, who portrayed Sally Albright and Harry Burns, respectively, shared, “It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic. Can’t wait to show you all soon.”
In the accompanying photo, the two are seated together on a set resembling the couple’s interview space from the film, though it’s unclear if the table is actually made from a wagon wheel. Crystal wears a cable-knit sweater similar to Harry’s signature look, while Ryan sports a blazer and button-up reminiscent of Sally’s iconic business casual style.
For those who may not know the storyline, “When Harry Met Sally” follows the journey of college graduates Harry Burns and Sally Albright as they debate during a car ride from Chicago to New York about the possibility of men and women maintaining purely platonic friendships. A decade later, they reconnect at a bookstore and attempt to navigate their friendship while keeping romance and sexual tension at bay, with the help of their friends Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher).
The two actors have yet to disclose specific details regarding their collaboration, but fans are already making guesses about what it could be.
What might their collaboration entail?
Some fans, including those from the lifestyle brand Brit + Co, speculate that Ryan and Crystal may be working together on a Super Bowl LIX advertisement, set to air on February 9.
“I instantly thought it might be for a Super Bowl ad since that’s around the corner, and it seems logical they might film something short instead of a full-length movie,” noted a content creator from Brit + Co in a TikTok video posted Thursday. “There just doesn’t seem to be enough time for a plot that elaborate.”
Going further with the Super Bowl ad theories, TikTok user Gracie Aki predicted that the ad might be for Uber Eats.
Aki referenced Uber Eats’ Super Bowl spot from 2021 featuring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey from “Wayne’s World” as evidence for her prediction.
“I envision Meg Ryan as Sally saying, ‘You know, sometimes you want something on the side,’ to which he (Crystal) would respond, ‘On the side is a very big thing for you.’ Then they’ll conclude with, ‘With Uber Eats, we can both get what we want,'” Aki shared in her TikTok. “That’s just from that one photo!”
Many comments beneath the Instagram announcement echoed this sentiment, expressing hope for a sequel, but leaning toward the likelihood of a Super Bowl ad instead.
A timeless cult classic
Since its release in 1989, “When Harry Met Sally” has amassed $92.8 million in box office earnings according to IMDb. Over the past 26 years, the rom-com has earned a devoted following, especially among Gen Xers who remember catching it in theaters, as well as Gen Zers who crave romance in today’s evolving dating scene.
In light of Ryan and Crystal’s recent news, many fans are reminiscing and sharing their cherished memories tied to “When Harry Met Sally.”
“My parents were ‘just friends’ and went to see ‘When Harry Met Sally’ in theaters. My mom left in tears and told my dad, ‘I don’t want to be just friends anymore.’ My dad replied, ‘Neither do I.’ They are the real-life Harry and Sally and have been happily married for almost 34 years,” commented Instagram user Sydney Altfield on the stars’ posts.
“It only took six months. Thirty-five years and six months. #wellworththewait #favoritemovie,” wrote another fan.
“I’ve maintained since its release that it’s my ALL-TIME favorite movie! I watched it one Friday night and immediately went back in to see it again as soon as it was over,” shared yet another fan.
