Yankees’ Aaron Judge Sets Record as Fastest Player to Reach 300 Home Runs in MLB
CHICAGO — While enjoying an MVP-level season, Aaron Judge has hit another impressive home run milestone.
In a surprising move, the opposing team chose to intentionally walk Juan Soto, putting Judge at the plate with first base open.
On Wednesday evening at Guaranteed Rate Field, the Yankees’ captain hit his 300th career home run off Chicago White Sox pitcher Chad Kuhl, a three-run blast in the eighth inning.
Judge’s 43rd home run of the season not only led the league, but also marked him as the quickest player to achieve 300 career homers in terms of games played, according to Elias.
Previously held by Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner at 1,087 games, Judge accomplished this feat in just 955 games, according to Elias.
The significant baseball, which landed in the White Sox bullpen, was retrieved and presented to Judge after the Yankees finished their 10-2 victory.
“What Aaron is doing is truly remarkable,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated earlier in the week.
After hitting three home runs in a 4-1 victory on Tuesday, Soto hit a solo homer in the first inning of Wednesday’s game, making it four home runs in his last four official at-bats (including a walk).
With the Yankees leading 6-2 following an RBI double by Alex Verdugo, interim White Sox manager Grady Sizemore chose to intentionally walk Soto to face Judge, who made history with his home run.
“I consider him the greatest hitter in the world,” said Soto of his teammate, who is in contention for the Triple Crown.
“Just look at his stats; they are incredible. He makes it easier for me and improves my opportunities at the plate.
“When you hit in front of such a talent, you know you’re going to see good pitches,” he added.
Following Judge’s 299th home run on Sunday, Boone expressed that he sometimes underestimates Judge’s exceptional hitting skills.
“I remind myself from time to time to appreciate what I get to witness with him,” Boone shared. “His development into the player and hitter he is today is truly remarkable.”
At 32, Judge became just the seventh Yankee to achieve 300 home runs for the team, joining legends like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and Alex Rodriguez.
A-Rod, with 351 homers as a Yankee, is next in line on the franchise’s all-time list, while Ruth tops it with 659 home runs listed as a Yankee.
Judge, who set the franchise and American League record for the most home runs in a season with 62 in 2022, is slightly behind that pace this year. He may face an obstacle in his pursuit of breaking his own record — the rising number of intentional walks he receives.
