Aaron Rodgers potentially on his way out as Jets QB in 2025, reports indicate
The New York Jets might be preparing for their seventh starting quarterback in just five seasons, according to recent speculation.
Aaron Rodgers’ time with the Jets has been tumultuous since his trade to the team in 2023. He managed only four snaps in 2023 and has played 11 games in the 2024 season, raising questions about his future with the team.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Rodgers faces a significant challenge in securing his position as the starting quarterback for 2025, hinting at a swift separation between him and the Jets.
The ultimate decision regarding Rodgers’ status lies with Jets owner Woody Johnson. If Rodgers does not improve in the coming games, Johnson may consider ending the partnership.
Rapoport notes that Johnson’s dissatisfaction with the trade has become “palpable.”
Rodgers, who is set to turn 41 in December, is not only contending with the effects of aging but also with injuries. He has been visibly struggling throughout the season with knee, hamstring, and ankle issues, and has reportedly declined to undergo medical evaluations to assess the severity of his injuries.
These injuries might explain some of his struggles this year. Although he has thrown 17 touchdown passes against seven interceptions, observers feel that he and the Jets’ offense have not been performing well overall.
The Jets currently stand at 3-8 for the 2024 season and are long shots for the playoffs, despite a relatively weak AFC. They still have a manageable schedule ahead but have struggled with consistency on both offense and defense since the beginning of the season. This lack of progress has led to the dismissal of head coach Robert Saleh, followed by general manager Joe Douglas, as the team aims for a fresh start.
With a bye week in Week 12, the Jets will return to play in Week 13 against the Seahawks at home. This matchup could signal the beginning of Rodgers’ final chapter with the team.
