Why are BYU and Colorado, both from the Big 12, playing in the Alamo Bowl?

This is due to recent changes in college football conference alignments. The Alamo Bowl had agreements to host the first non-playoff teams from both the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences. However, the Pac-12 disbanded this year, with 10 teams migrating to other conferences, including Colorado, which rejoined the Big 12.

Rather than adjusting these agreements to reflect the new conference structure, the Alamo Bowl will continue to pick its matchups from the same two pools: the 12 teams from the former Pac-12 (with Colorado included) and the 12 teams from the pre-realignment Big 12 (including BYU). This arrangement will repeat in 2025.

Although BYU did not compete against Colorado this season, they are scheduled to face off in Boulder in 2025.
