USWNT star Alex Morgan announces retirement from soccer, second pregnancy

On Thursday, Alex Morgan, a prominent player on the United States women’s national soccer team, shared her decision to retire after more than 14 years with the squad.

At 35 years old, Morgan played a total of 224 matches with the USWNT, netting 123 goals and providing 53 assists, making her the fifth-highest goal scorer in the team’s history. She made her debut in March 2010 and has been an essential player, contributing to the USWNT’s victories in two straight World Cups in 2015 and 2019, winning gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and securing bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

In a video shared on her social media, Morgan expressed, “This decision did not come lightly, but early in 2024, I realized that this would be my last season playing soccer. Soccer has been part of my life for 30 years, and it was one of the first passions I had. I dedicated everything to this sport, and the rewards I received exceeded my wildest dreams.”

Her final professional game with the San Diego Wave in the NWSL is set for Sunday, September 8, against the North Carolina Courage.

“I’m incredibly thankful for the chance to play one last match,” Morgan remarked in her video.

Morgan also shared the exciting news that she is expecting her second child. She welcomed her first daughter, Charlie, in May 2020 and is married to former MLS player Servando Carrasco.

“This news took us by surprise, but we are absolutely thrilled,” Morgan said. “Family is everything to me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my husband and my family.”

During her career, Morgan was also a strong advocate for equal pay and resources for the USWNT.

“The other day, Charlie told me she wants to be a soccer player when she grows up, and that made me so proud […] because it’s a dream she can aspire to thanks to the opportunities we’ve paved,” Morgan stated. “We are making a difference, and the influence we’ve had on future generations is immense. I’m glad to have played a part in advancing the game and leaving it in a state that makes me proud.”

“I just want to express my gratitude to all the fans for their unwavering support and for amplifying our voices. Your presence and commitment, not only to the teams I’ve competed for but to the person I am, mean the world.”
