Alpha Kappa Alpha, the sorority of Kamala Harris, initiates political action committee
WASHINGTON – Alpha Kappa Alpha, a prominent historically Black sorority associated with Vice President Kamala Harris, has created a political action committee that enables the organization to gather funds for political candidates.
This sorority is a member of the Divine Nine, consisting of nine historically Black fraternities and sororities that together represent nearly two million individuals, significantly influencing the mobilization of Black suburban and middle-class voters.
This new initiative arises as both Harris and former President Donald Trump are aiming to gain support from Black voters during the upcoming general election.
After President Biden exited the race, the Divine Nine Council of Presidents released a statement affirming their commitment to respond to this pivotal moment in history with a coordinated campaign for voter registration, education, and mobilization.
They stated, “This campaign will engage the thousands of chapters and members within our organizations to ensure significant voter turnout in the communities we represent,” although they did not specify which candidates they are supporting.
Harris frequently praises the Divine Nine and, in a 2019 statement to YSL News, expressed, “Throughout your life, you find friends who become family and, like family, they contribute to shaping your experiences. For me, that was the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., who became my sisters.”
