Amy Poehler responds to Beyoncé naming ‘Inside Out 2’ as her favorite movie of 2024

Amy Poehler is excited about Beyoncé’s admiration.

Like many fans, the Emmy-winning actress is a huge fan of the iconic singer’s music and her memorable role in the 2002 film “Austin Powers in Goldmember.” Thus, it’s no surprise that Poehler is thrilled to hear that Beyoncé recently referred to “Inside Out 2” as her favorite movie of the year during a rare interview with GQ.

“She’s a Virgo, so she’s got a good sense of taste,” Poehler joked, who lends her voice to Joy in Disney/Pixar’s popular animated film. “Wow! I’m honestly overwhelmed that Beyoncé liked it—I need a moment. (Laughs.) That really means a lot to me. She’s just such a legend; she excels at everything she does.”

“Inside Out 2” is available for streaming on Disney+ and can be purchased on platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video. The sequel has grossed around $1.7 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing animated film ever and the eighth-largest film overall (not adjusted for inflation).

Poehler attributes much of the film’s success to its timing. Similar to the first installment, “Inside Out 2” explores the thoughts of a girl named Riley (voiced by Kensington Tallman), but this time, she navigates teenage emotions, including Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke). Over the nearly ten years since the original, the cultural landscape has increasingly encouraged open conversations about mental health, particularly among Gen Z audiences.

“People are eager to discuss anxiety, its relationship with joy, and the concept of toxic positivity,” Poehler notes. “In the past decade, many have engaged deeply with their emotions, making it feel like we were all ready to embrace this topic.”

Given that Beyoncé is also a mother of three, Poehler remarks, “The movie addresses many parenting themes. It explores how to allow loved ones to experience feelings without trying to absorb those feelings for them.”

Since the release of “Inside Out 2” three months ago, Poehler has relished the audience’s enthusiasm for Pouchy (voiced by James Austin Johnson), a quirky talking fanny pack that Joy meets in Riley’s mind. She humorously adds, “There’s definitely something a little odd about him—he’s very open about his pouch.” The film also plays on Riley’s Deep Dark Secret (voiced by Steve Purcell), but to some fans’ surprise, it turns out to be rather harmless, revealed in a light-hearted post-credits scene. (According to Poehler, the filmmakers aimed to avoid stressing kids by leaving it mysterious.)

For Poehler, the film represents a highlight of “the best summer ever,” especially as she celebrated her 53rd birthday last week. The beloved “Saturday Night Live” alum marked the occasion at the premiere of Marvel’s “Agatha All Along,” joined by her former “Parks and Recreation” colleagues, Aubrey Plaza, Kathryn Hahn, and Adam Scott.

“Being in my 50s has been wonderful,” Poehler shares. “This past year has been filled with so much love, and I truly appreciate that. I try to focus on what I have rather than what I lack.”

As award season approaches, she expresses, “To be completely honest, I hope ‘Inside Out 2’ is considered for an Academy Award for best film.” The last animated feature nominated for the best picture Oscar was Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” back in 2011.

While she confirms no talks have happened regarding an “Inside Out 3,” she adds, “I’m always ready for whatever comes next. Since I play Joy, I’m like: ‘Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go!’”

And who knows? Perhaps Beyoncé could lend her voice to a new character in the possible third installment.

“Let’s hope for that,”

Poehler states with a smile, “God, who is also known as Beyoncé.”
